My house sits on a few acres that are heavily wooded. I’ve spent quarantine clearing a good bit of my front yard of underbrush but leaving most of the trees. My plan is to leave it wooded and not worry about growing grass.

I have a brick cistern that’s a pretty cool feature that has been uncovered and is visible. I’d like to make a pathway/walking trail to the cistern and through the property with the area around the cistern maybe being brick. I don’t intend on the entire walkway being brick.

So 2 questions - 1. What’s the best and least expensive way to do a brick walkway?
2. What are some appealing walking trail ideas that won’t cost a fortune?

Edging, landscape filter fabric, and crushed rock might look good.

You could also consider one of those plastic molds you pour concrete into.

least expensive:
-geotech or landscape fabric
-pea gravel
-Liriope border

you can clear the path by hand or with a box blade and tractor

least expensive brick walkway is to buy reclaimed brick from a demo job but make sure they’ve knocked the mortar off. New face brick is about 500/cube

prep the area with landscape fabric after cleared, put down a couple inches of mason sand, set your brick and then brush in more sand with a stiff push broom

Thanks for all of the ideas... decomposed granite looks good. Hoping it is within budget.

Thanks again!

Do not do this ever. I did this and regret it constantly. I used limestone fabric and poly sand. Old brick holds alot of moisture which grows green and black algae. So I have to chlorox 50/50 every two weeks to kill it. Nothing else works. After a while the old brick turned turns white haze due to salt deposits from chlorox that you can only get off by pressure washing which blows out the sand everywhere that you have to replace. Just don't. But damn it looks good around the pool when clean.

I too have a heavily shaded yard - I put down flat natural stones in a random pattern and let the moss fill in the gaps. I think they are flagstone. About 1” thick and variety is shapes and sizes most about 1’x2’.
