Building a house and reviewing all the info out there on ranges is overwhelming - never know who is recommending what based on what they sell

Any feedback on the Wolf vs Viking - can bundle much better with Viking - but concerned over their past customer experience issues and reliability - sales person says they have revamped all of it -

If better at the Food and Drink board, please move

Thoughts?

Team BlueStar checking in. High BTUs, no frills, no electronics. Can get a custom color, if you’re into that sort of thing. 30” range stilll has an oven wide enough for a half sheet pan. Can use a real round bottom wok right on the stovetop. 1800 degree broiler.

Did I mention zero electronic panels to fail?

Parents have a Wolf double-oven, built very well is actually pretty easy to maintain and service. Thermador is good too.

Sorry to butt in, but how about 5 star? I moved into a house with a 5 star 6 burner top, griddle, gas and electric oven.

was coming to say this too. don't they also have a star-pattern burner that is proprietary and cooks really well?

Wolf is where it’s at right now. Viking has had some issues here recently and they may have fixed them. Just going by my recent experience. (Couple yrs ago)

The newer wolf stuff is really nice l.

I have a 22 year old...36" 6 burner. SS Viking. We've enjoyed it. Some minor problems along the way. Oven igniters will have to be replaced from time to time. At one time customer service was less than stellar. Not necessarily recommending the brand.

The only advice I would offer is whatever brand you choose, get the dual fuel version....gas burners/cooktop...electric oven.

I built a new house last year. After a lot of research I went with Thermador appliances.

36" gas range, double wall oven with microwave, and dishwasher. Very happy with all of it.

I have had both. I think the Thermadors are the better value and I liked the range better. I do think the star burner heated better and the simmer features were better. I also liked the griddle and grill area on the 48" range better with Thermador. Cleaned easier.
There aren't significant differences I noticed in DW or microwave. I did like the built in pan and float switch under the Thermador dishwasher.
For me it came down to price and after the flood I was remodeling and Wolf gave extra discounts to the affected parishes that made the pricing the same. After having both now, I would not pay more for Wolf.

Straightforward is a good description of BS. People who want pretty kitchens with a semi commercial look choose Wolf. Hardcore cooks buy BS. There isn’t anything I can’t fix on my BS with a Phillips head screwdriver.

House cleaner sprayed a shite ton of oven cleaner on the oven floor, fried the thermostat. $80 for a part and 1/2 hour later, it was fixed. I fried an igniter charring eggplants directly on the stovetop (it ruptured and made a mess), and I easily changed it.

A few things to know: it is an unsealed top, so there are nooks and crannies beneath the top that need cleaning. Drip pan beneath is easily lined with foil to ease cleaning. Very high prolonged Oven temps will cause the knobs to get hot, so if you’ve got tiny children who aren’t well supervised, someone might get an owie. They’re not hot enough to actually burn, but you wouldn’t want to hang on tight for fun.

The modular top is all cast iron, so it’s not shiny....it develops a patina, like a good CI skillet. I like the RNB series, with 22,000 BTU burners and a simmer burner and 12k btu burner in the back on the 4-burner configuration.

I won’t ever need another range. No circuit boards to go out of production, no stupid LED displays to fail bc of proximity to high heat, no dumb bells and whistles that aren’t really necessary, Just real deal, high heat. Be sure your vent hood can handle the heat output. A toy hood is insufficient for a high BTU stove.

I have a gas oven. I'm not sure why people prefer electric.

Serious bread bakers prefer electric. Has ovens are vented so it’s nearly impossible to trap steam in the oven, and certain styles of bread require steaming to develop their full potenti.

I have a Viking fridge and it’s an embarrassment to American manufacturing. Almost every bin and shelf is cracked and falling apart, the door sags an inch, and the compressor is on the way out. Steer clear.

I have a DCS convection oven range that has been solid.

Don’t electric keep more precise temps too? Gas ovens turn on and off with a small variable range, where as electric can stay within a tighter range? That’s what I’ve been told and makes common sense but may not be right anymore.
