Whirlpool washer lid switch melted

Last night I told my wife to do the laundry. Shortly after starting a wash cycle there was a burning plastic smell. I pulled the power and opened it up and the wiring harness connector at the lid switch was starting to melt.
What would cause it to suddenly melt?
If I get a new lid switch and splice in a new connector will it happen again?
Is there any way to bypass the melted switch so I can finish the wash cycle?
Older whirlpool model # SM8525492

Something happened at the harness to allow arching. As long as you can cut back to good wire a replacement harness should fix you up.
You can go ahead and remove the old harness and connect the wires but make sure they can't get wet. That will tell the board that the lid is closed.

Just connect the hot to neutral, correct? Leave the ground wire loose?

Yes you can bypass. They can melt because the contacts wear over time and create racing inside that gets really hot. But lid switches are dirt cheap. Not sure what your retail would be by i get them less than $5 wholesale.
You can easily splice. But if you have no little kids just jump the two wires that aren't green(usually white and Grey or tan and white)
Just to stop the machine you have to push the timer in it'll ruin with lid open

The switch can short out causing problems to melt. Get a new switch.

Gracias. Twisted hot and neutral together, connected ground, machine is running, just ordered new harness and lid switch. My wife is very impressed right now with my electrical skills.

Not sure what would cause a failure like that, but fairly easy to replace yourself. It plugs in under the console. Mine just stopped locking one day. 30 minutes to replace or less.

Great job!
As you do more and more fixes and repairs on things, everything becomes easier and easier to fix yourself.
YouTube is awesome to teach yourself.
