House was built in the 1970s and I just found this on the wall on the catwalk of my garage. It was hidden behind a piece of wood until today. It was SCREWED into the outlet with locktite or someshit and it took a bit of work to get it out. it looks fried...my best guess is maybe this is related to the 'in wall' vacuum of the house whose tank lives in the basement but since its never worked, i don't know if this was part of that or not.

in any case, it was HOT and its unplugged now so whatever juice its been stealing we've put a stop to it. i guess i'll keep an eye on anything that doesn't seem to be working.

on the PLUS side..I was about to install an outlet on that side of the garage and now i've got one to tie into!

Maybe for an alarm system. 16volt 40VA is common for alarms.

aha! makes sense. we had one of those in-wall intercoms in every room and a connected doorbell at the front along w/ a big control box in the kitchen.

we gutted those from every room so this might be the last remnant of that old system.

That was my first thought. The alarm system my parents had installed in the mid 90s had a metal box that all the sensor's wires ran to. Then the whole system was powered by a transformer that looked exactly like that and was screwed into the outlet just like that so that it couldn't be easily unhooked.

I remember it well cause the metal junction box was in the front door hall closet and the closest outlet was through the wall and in my bedroom. So that box was plugged up behind my sweet CD boom box.

that makes even more sense and probably why it was hidden until now...it was designed that way so you couldn't easily locate and unplug it.

the house also had an alarm system.

Yeah. I had a similar setup in my last house from the alarm controller.
