My home was built in 1990, and by far the best "upgrade" we have done, besides wood floors throughout, was removing walls to the dining room and sunroom, creating a much more open floor plan.

Re: pull out drawers. If y’all mean pull-out drawers inside cabinets, I’d say that drawers instead of cabinet doors are even more convenient. Our pantry does have slide out drawers behind cabinet doors, though.

ETA: We don’t need grab bars yet, but when we remodeled two bathrooms we had them installed in the tub and shower areas. You can find attractive ones that don’t look clunky. I regret that we didn’t follow a recommendation to have the walls by the toilets prepared for future grab bars should they become necessary.

Honorable mention is getting rid of the microwave above the stove and having a hood vent built.

good one i forgot about. we replaced our pathetic 'no external vent' cheapo fake hood with a real one that vents to the outside.

Yes, I’m happy that we were able to do this, too, but we were also moving the range top to an outside wall so that venting outside was easier.

I have not heard of this before. What do you use it for, how often and where is yours located?

Also, having had a microwave/vent combo over the cooktop for years, if/when I remodel again I will opt for a under-counter drawer microwave.

Appreciate everyone's insight, added the below to our list

- Pull out kitchen drawers
- High quality outlets
- Home audio system / media room
- Inside water cut off
- Run gas line to front porch lantern (already have gas stove and fireplace)
- Outlets for security cameras

Sometimes that is the only place that will work.

We have a central vacuum system and we use it several times a day with small children. I can’t imagine not having one of ever again.

We have a dyson hand held that we use to quickly vacuum the kitchen every day so I haven't found the need for the central vac. Would it be more convinient than my current system?

I hate that. Will never buy a house with that ever again. How much did that run you getting it built?
