Let's see how good some of you are, ha. My mother's st.augustine lawn got weedy last summer. There was a grassy weed throughout much of the turf. I didn't get to manage it last year. Now that winter has rolled around, this weed appears to be dead. BUT, I was hoping to figure out what it was so I can get ahead of it for next year. To be clear, I'm trying to figure out what the dead, grassy weed is.

Looks like green kyllinga

Hard to tell from the photos without a close up on an entire plant but my first guess is common Bermudagrass that is dormant.
If Bermudagrass there is no selective herbicide one can use to kill bermudagrass that won’t damage the St Augustine. It’s important that the St Augustine be cut high, 3 to 3 1/2 inches so that over time the St Augustine crowds out the Bermudagrass.
It’s a slow process though - could take several years. Cutting St Augustine low weakens it and favors proliferation of Bermudagrass present in the lawn.

kyllinga. Not dead. It goes dormant before the st aug or centipede. I think you have to hit it with a sedge killer when its growing.
Many yards in my neighborhood look exactly like that right now.

As others have said, best guess is kyllinga. Try Image All in One weed killer or Bonide Sedge Ender.
