for those that have gone through this, what do you wish you would have done differentlyor glad you did?

Also, does Jandy or Hayward make a difference?

Will not have a heater (told we can do later if needed) and will be 17*34 - gunite. Spoke to 4 contractors so far and all have offered salt on their bids and I haven't asked about chlorine.

I 100% wish we had installed an In Floor Pool Cleaning System instead of relying on a Polaris.

quote:

What is an in-floor pool cleaning system? An in-floor pool cleaning system uses pop up cleaners to clear the pool of debris and dirt. They’re called pop ups because they literally pop out of the pool floor to clean and then retract again when they're done. These are typically installed when the pool is built and are placed all around the surface of the pool, including benches, steps, and walls. The average pool might have 15 or more pop up heads scattered around in strategic zones. This may sound like a lot of hardware, but you don't need to worry - pop ups are flush with the pool’s surface when recessed and not in use, and they don’t get in the way of swimming or playing.

I have all Heyward equipment and am satisfied, but I have not heard anything bad about Jandy.

1) get a salt generating chlorine system, well worth it

2) be extra sure of where the water jets and the skimmer boxes are located to be sure the boxes are in a place where the jets push the water towards them. I have a box that is in a dead area and it's not able to do it's job

3) get full automation that works on your phone. Again, well worth the cost

That's all I got...

DONT LET YOUR CONTRACTOR GET AWAY WITH HOOKING YOUR PUMP UP DIRECTLY TO YOUR BREAKER BOX. THAT IS LAZY AND shite WILL BREAK OVER TIME IF YOU HAVE TO FLIP THE BREAKER EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO TURN THE PUMP OFF. Make them install a damn switch.

- also consider a smart or variable speed pump. 'dumb' pump running 24/7 will hit your electric bill. even a pump connected to an intermatic timer is better than nothing if you don't want to pay $$$ for a so-called smart system.

- consider running a water line to pool as a pool filler. much easier than dragging a garden hose over each time. you'll be surprised how quickly your water evaporates in the summer and wish you had done this.

- what type of filter? i would go sand filter over anything else. easy to clean and practically bulletproof.

- what kind of underwater lighting are you going with? obviously you want to go with LEDs but are you going with one big light or multiple smaller ones?

- i would go with a multiport vs those crappy blue valves that will break over time.

- have you planned for where your pool will drain? make sure you understand where those hundreds of gallons of water are going when you have to drain after heavy rains.

- buy a dolphin robot. this is the best thing you can do for your pool. little robot cleans his heart out and even climbs the walls. your pool maintenance is practically zero with one of these doing most of the work.

- any other crap you adding? spa? diving board? slide? basketball goal?

- i would price out adding a spa as part of your pool for shits and grins. will be way better to do this at the same time than adding an above ground spa later on. you got one shot at doing this right so that it looks integrated...

- go to troublefreepool and read up on the latest there. those grumpy old white men know their shite.

have you tried to tune your jets and skimmer suctions?

i mean i really liked my salt water pool, but i have seen no savings at all over chlorine and thats with chlorine at all times highs due to the fire at biolab during hurricane laura. The plant will be back online sometime next year bringing the price way down

also the salt generator....they have went up substantially in price and the quality has gone down so they are not lasting as long. They are extremely hard to come by also. Plus i fricking hated having to break down the piping, pull the salt generator off and fill with acid then putting the cap on. I frickING HATED Getting a whiff of that while doing and that is the only real way to clean the salt generator and make them last.

i expect 90% of people dont do that though.

other thing with salt was i hated how all the metal within 20 yards would be eaten up in a year. Nothing last around it.

i do like the way salt feels though for sure. But i mean i used as much shock in my salt water pool as i do in my chlorine pool (1-2 lbs per week) during the summer.

In Floor Pool Cleaning System

I'd never consider this. It's still 100% going to miss some spots, and it sounds like a huge pain if something breaks.

Im 1000% on team Saltwater on this one. Best thing ive done to our pool. I also wish that i had installed a pool chiller when they were installing the heater for the hot tub.

Do Chlorine system, not salt.
Are you doing a heater? Propane/gas/heat pump, go bigger than what they tell you, trust me on this one.
Might consider getting a chiller also.
Get plenty of jets installed to circulate the water.
Water falls are cool but they are known for leaks.
Kidney shaped pools are cool but you get more bang for the buck doing square, rectangle.
My deep end is 8 foot, I wished I would have done 10.
Automatic water fill for when the water gets low.
Tanning ledges are cool but we don't use ours.
May consider a bench/chairs/umbrella and table somewhere in the pool.
Wireless control system to control everything.
When it's built and the builder does a walk
through on working the system have someone handy to video his instructions on operating everything. Make copies of this
Label the plumbing/valves for their function, take pics of the labels, it will fade over time.
I'm sure I missed a lot but good luck!

100% agree. at worst a new dolphin is $800 if yours eventually breaks.

wife fusses at me constantly about this. she wants to put her lounger in the pool and hates we don't have one. (i agree with you fwiw)

i wouldn't overthink this. you can buy an outdoor 240v wifi switch on amazon for $60 that you can set up schedules on via alexa. i am not sure what you honestly need out of those fancy $5,000 control systems you don't get from a simple wifi switch.

If you are having to shock on a weekly basis a regular pool or one with a SWG then you are doing something terribly wrong. Was regular chlorine for 10 years then swapped to SWG two years ago. Circupool RJ45+ generator for 20,000 gallon pool. Test weekly and adjust output as needed. Haven’t shocked ever. Cell rated for 15,000 hrs of operation and prorated by company for early replacement.
10% bleach was at 4 per gallon when I swapped it and pool was eating a gallon a day. Math worked out for me to change it.
Continuously shocking pool or using tabs is increasing your cyanuric acid. Eventually you’ll end up with chlorine lock and have to drain pool to get rid of it.

Go salt water. It's easy. Only thing I add weekly is 4-6 cups of muriatic acid to keep PH in range. We went with Jandy and its been great so far and is easy to operate.
