A few months back I had a nasty surprise where a leak in the main about 10' outside my house cost me some serious money. Both in terms of repair and my water bill before detecting the leak.

We occasionally go on vacation or visit family for 2+ weeks, so I'd like to have a way to monitor remotely. Is there some kind of devices that report to my phone if consumption is over the average monthly bill, especially in the first few weeks of the billing cycle?

Flume

Reports minute by minute usage, notifies if consumption is high for the month, and notifies about potential leaks within a few hours. Zero monthly fees, installation is dead simple, and batteries last about a year.

Check that your meter is compatible before buying. I think most are.

I was reading about this, how does it read my meter? They really don't go into details on the site which worries me.

It just straps to the outside of the meter and detects the spinning magnetic disk inside. It works very well.

Here is my last few months usage vs last year

And here is a notification I got last year about a potential leak

Why not just turn the water off at the meter if you’re going on an extended trip?

That won't detect a leak in the main outside the house.

do you have ZERO house plants or flowers in planters? we have someone come in when we're out of town even just 3-4 days to keep everything watered or we'd come home to a dead house.

You wouldn’t need to detect a leak since the water would be turned off at the meter. And if you are referring to the meter itself leaking, that’s the water company’s problem, not the homeowner

When I turn it back on I want to know if I'm paying to raise the water table.

Sorry it just makes zero sense to me to cut the water off every time I go out of town in case I have a leak when for just a few hundred dollars I have bought a device that detects leaks 24/7 and reports my consumption in real time. My water stays on so my aunt can care for the cat, the cleaners can do their thing, and I'll know if I ever have a leak inside or outside the house whether I'm home or not.

Just fill up a couple of 1 gallon milk jugs for the cat water.
When you shut off the water at the meter, be sure to turn off your hot water heater and open the water in a sink to be sure the shut off valve is not still letting water get into the house.

Or, now hear me out, I could just not worry about any of that because my home knows exactly how much water passes through the meter each and every minute so I know about any leak within 2 hours, even underground ones.

That's exactly what OP asked for, right?

And what good does it do at midnight and a massive leak starts? Hey, atleast you can monitor it. I'll always continue to close @ meter or main ball valve.. No need to even have a thought about the water while we are away.

Do you shut your water off when you go to bed or work?

It does a lot of good to know when a leak starts. Again, I will know about any leak within 2 hours. You could spring a massive leak underground and not know about it for days or weeks, probably when you get your next water bill.

The pushback here blows my mind guys. Why would I shut my water off 5 or 6 times per year for that peace of mind when for $150 (the new model might be $250) I not only don't have to remember to shut off the main but I also get peace of mind 24/7 when I'm asleep or at work or whatever? Additionally, I get consumption data and I know how much my water bill will be before I get it.

i'm shaking my damn head too.

maybe turning off the water valve behind the washing machine but cutting off water to your house for a week?? that seems excessive.

i thought everyone was an OT baller on here who had underground water sprinkler systems or rainbirds going. who turns their water off at the meter in the summer?

One of the counters was what good does it do at midnight. Uhh real time monitoring is the *only* way to do any good at midnight.

right. if you're out of town, you can call the water company and have them send someone out the next morning or if you're home in bed you can walk outside & key the meter off and go back to bed and sort it out later.

A burst pipe can do a shite load of damage in 2 hours

Sure it can. I guess I'm just playing with fire then by not shutting off the main during the ~5% of the year that I'm out of town. I should probably shut it off every day to cover the ~25% of the year that the house is not occupied on a daily basis. Probably also every night for the ~30% of the year that we're home but sleeping too.

Edit: So I just noticed in the app that the 2 hours is for slow leak detection. You can also set custom high flow alerts to cover burst pipe scenarios. These can alert as quickly as 4 minutes.
