Rheem gas water heater suddenly quit working. Water heater installed Nov or Dec 2020. Everything else gas is working fine.

1. What happened? Thermocouple?
2. Trying to light pilot and it won't spark when I hit the ignitor. Is this a second problem? Not sure how the problem would be related to it turning off

Assume I will have to use lighter to light pilot but don't have one that will reach in there.

The thermocouple is likely bad.

Seems too new to have issues.
But, it could be dusty causing issues. Maybe vacuum out around the area under the water heater and ports.
Doubtful, but possible.

Every gas water heater I've ever had that had a problem wound up being the thermocoupler.

As for lighting the pilot light, roll up some paper real thin, light it and reach in to light the pilot light. Or maybe get one of those long BBQ type lighters at the supermarket and use it.

Just make sure you are depressing the control know to allow gas to flow to the pilot light. Just putting the knob on pilot does nada until you depress it to allow gas to flow.

I watch many this guy’s HVAC videos and he’s prepared some on gas water heater troubleshooting - hope they help. Many HVAC techs in the NE USA also do a lot of plumbing related work as HVAC usually doesn’t keep them busy year round.

watched the linked videos but a little more than I'm willing to test for everything he did. Will make sure lines are tight but likely going to b*&ch out a call a plumber. Damnit!

ETA - thanks for the responses

Did you follow the instructions to light the pilot?

Turn the gas off, turn to light and push down on the button then press the button to light. At least that’s the way most are.

Yes - followed lighting instructions.

Got a better look at parts thru little window. They look like they are covered in soot. One of the linked videos mentioned that this could be reason why it’s hard to light. But if less than a year old - how did that happen?

I had a Rheem installed back in February 2021. It quit working about 5 weeks ago. I contacted the plumber who installed it and gave him the model number etc. he mentioned they had a bad batch of valves or something of that nature. He replaced the part and all is well.

Mine would light inconsistently but would go out anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour later.

I’d start by contacting the person who installed it.

Apparently the model had a known problem with the controller. Replaced that yesterday. Still didn't fix the problem.

luckily - have a shower on separate water heater

I believe they replaced the gas valve on mine. Whatever they changed out fixed my issue. Hope they get yours figured out.
