Based on the recommendations of board members in prior threads, I bought a Speed Queen set. So far I am very happy.

Another vote for Speed Queen.
The only thing left with any kind of long term reliability.
Also, get the basic no-frills models as the above poster said. Less crap to tinker with=equals less crap to go wrong.

My parents just bought a new Maytag front load dryer. The door doesn't sit flush at the bottom-right corner and the latching mechanism makes an awful sound when opening/closing it. It's noticeably louder than the Kenmore it replaced and the lint filter is flimsy as hell. But, it is "Commercial Duty" with a "10 Year Warranty"!! Don't recommend.

Speed Queen will be my next purchase. Currently have 31 year old Maytag washer and dryer but they are not built the same now so I am going SQ next major repair (already been told that transmissions for the WM are no longer available if this one breaks).
If electronic controls worry you, buy the TC5/DC5 as suggested by another poster. I will be going with the TR7/DR7 personally. $100 more per unit with 2 extra years of warranty (7 years vs 5 years).

If you go with a SQ, you should understand the difference between the TC and TR washer models as it it might influence your decision on what model to buy. FWIW, I have the SQ TR5 - and yes it cleans my clothes just fine. I think the price is about the same for the TR & TC series. .
