Purchased a new to me home in Aug 2020. I've not dealt with weed control yet due to other priorities. It's obvious that the former homeowners did put much effort on weed control.

Have a bad case of Virginia Buttonweed and there are plenty of other types of weeds in the backyard (some dollarweed and other unknowns). St. AUG grass in Houston area.

I'm thinking about trying Celsius and spot treating the VBweed for now. I'll spot treat other areas/weeds with this as well. I've not used Celsius in the past, but this seems like the best option.

Thoughts or recommendations? Should I use a surfactant with this approach? What surfactant do you recommend?

You’ll need the surfactant to break through the waxy coating on the dollar weeds. Or use dawn as I do. Weed free zone knocked back my VBW but I expect to continue to spray as it ain’t no over night thing..

Good info. Thanks. To clarify, you used the Fertilome Weed Free Zone with some success? That's a much cheaper option, so I might give that a shot.

You have the right herbicide to use for VBW, etc. this time of year, Celsius, or MSM Turf is good as well, and to get the most benefit from those herbicides, yes use surfactant (I.e., spreader/sticker). You can find this at most retail garden centers, hardware stores, but not the big box stores.

Thanks, CrawDude. Is MSM Turf okay to use this time of year and for spot treatment through the summer?

I have used this with great succeed.

OP
Check your yard for Sod Webworms. I swear those things are in league with the VBW. The webworms eat the good grass and VBW grows right in its place.

I have chamber bitter and VBW popping up right now.

I used the winter cocktail mix a couple months ago, so I have WeedFreeZone in the garage. Since temps are in the 85+ range now though, I was planning to pick up Celsius this week and spray that instead of the winter cocktail.

Should I combine Celsius and WFZ (with surfactant) or stick with one over the other?

Welcome to the struggle. It was so bad in my backyard that when I killed it I had no grass left so it was a till, regrade, resod process. Front wasn’t as bad bc it drains a little better. However, Celsius and surfactant work well. Just takes a little time for it to die and it’s an ongoing war.

Yes it is even though the label will state not to use above 85 F. Expect a little temporary yellowing of desirable turf but it will recover. Use a 1/8 teaspoon per gallon + 2 teaspoons of surfactant.

Though an excellent herbicide for VBW and other broadleaf weeds, It’s dangerous to turf grass using Weed-Free-Zone at temps above 85 F - it’s better reserved for use in spring and fall at cooler temps.

Stick with the Celsius this summer - no need to take chances with your turf grass with WFZ in this heat - and you can resume your use of the WFZ in the fall - you can stretch out your supply of Celsius by another year or 2 that way. This what I do on my own lawn.

I had to deal with this in South Louisiana and in South Alabama. I hated it and it was very hard to kill. I am in NW Arkansas now and I am hoping I don't have to deal with it here.

.1oz for 1 gallon? Damn I mixed at .1 for 4 gallons the other day. Maybe that’s why it’s a slow process for me.

0.1 oz MSM Turf per gallon is about 5X higher than the max labeled for VBW on MSM Turf label, assuming you spray the 1 gal over 1,000 sq ft.

You spray MSM Turf at that rate, might as well just spray roundup (glyphosate) directly on the VBW as you’ll likely have replace your desirable, but dead, turf grass either way.

LINK see page 13, 1 oz per acre = 0.023 oz per 1000 sq ft.

There would definitely be some yellowing of the turf
