**Updated 3/16** How much cleanup should be expected after tile demolition?

We hired assured flooring and I’m trying to figure out if the guys did a really shoddy job or if they didn’t properly inform us. The guys were pretty nonchalant about covering things when I asked, but I placed tarps on our countertops and along a wall to be safe.
We were out of town when demo/installation happened a literally EVERYTHING in our house is covered in dust. Including the second floor (where no demo took place). It’s all over the walls, in the room past where I placed the tarp, and even inside our cabinets.
We have to clean every single surface, dish, food item in our pantry, etc and I’m pretty livid that they didn’t set our expectations accordingly.
Am I overreacting, or is this a bad demo job? Our contract stated that customers “should expect work area needing further cleaning once we finish project”. To me this sounds like it should just be the room being demoed and some immediate connecting areas. Not the ENTIRE house.
ETA: I talked with their customer service team yesterday and sent them pics, and they agree that the amount of debris scattered across the house is completely unacceptable. We did a 60% downpayment upfront, and they won't make us pay the remainder 40% to make up for the hassle. An oven that they moved was damaged as well during the renovation, and they're agreeing to pay the costs for that too.
So yes our house is still a disaster, but this definitely helps ease things moving forward.

Your demo guys should have taken steps to keep this from happening. They should have taped off the rooms being demoed, covered everything that could have gotten dusty that couldn’t be moved out, swept/vacuumed up, and wiped off all surfaces. If this didn’t happen, you probably hired someone who doesn’t know or care, and probably hasn’t been in business very long and/or won’t be in business much longer. This should be a priority in a customer service business.

The air conditioner/heater should also be turned off. Check your filters.
Not much different from dry wall sanding.
It's alway somewhat of a mess, but sounds like you got the extreme case.

Yes, I forgot to mention turning off AC. The house should be cleaned before changing the filter and turning back on.

We just had this done in our kitchen and living room. I had the guys tape off the stairway to the second floor and closed all the doors to the rooms downstairs. That was enough to keep the dust out of the areas we needed it kept out of. The areas they demoed the tile were gutted so we didn’t worry about dust there.
We did get them to chisel the mortar instead of using a grinder. I think that helped out a lot. I know it made the job longer and was harder for the guys but we didn’t want the dust that grinding would create.

let me guess, they were cheaper?
They should have walled off the room with plastic, but even then dust gets by. I don't understand how dust seemingly travels through walls...

How large of an area was demo’d? It’s Hard to say without seeing it OP, but yes the dust goes everywhere. Taping plastic over doors where work isn’t done certainly helps but it’s never perfect either.

I would expec some precautions to be taken, but it is a damn messy job…I don’t think you could expect them to clean the 2nd floor of your house when they only worked on the 1st floor.

I never said I expected them to clean upstairs. I’m curious if it’s reasonable to expect dust to get all the way up there when it wasn’t in the area being worked on. The AC was turned off, so it wasn’t spreading throughout our intake

Total work area was about 600 sq ft, whole house is ~2500

Live and learn.
Hopefully you won't need to do again anytime soon. Share your wisdom with other now.
Life's too short to be pissed off about incompetence.
