Update: Ubaldo started today and he thinks he'll have the entire project done in 2 weeks. That's amazing because I threw a few curve balls at him.

Even more amazing is that he's doing a full drainage system underneath and tying it into the gutters as well for not much more than the quote I got from someone just to do a French drain! He's the man!

I'm in Vegas this week so I won't be able to update it as he goes but I was amazed how much he did today in just one hour while I was getting ready to go to the airport.

I owe you a beer or 5 for hooking me up with him.

bump

pad is down; 3 point drainage (2 gutters connected to pipe running underneath the slab and a drain to the right of that lightpost) and it all runs downhill away from the houes (upper right corner of pic)

waiting for the concrete to dry before he comes back and cuts it. also he's coming back to stain the brick edging and pressure wash the wall.

he's going to start building the fireplace on thursday.

It's elevated off the ground this way and allowed them to run a nice fat drainage pipe underneath

Bump.

Coming right along. We paused to consider hardiboard vs painting and we opted for painting since it was $3,000 instead of $37,000. we are painting trim white with black accent (see that test window) and as you can see from the side facing the sun the gray is not as dark as that one pic makes it appear. Every house in our neighborhood went white so the wife wants to go another direction on the paint so we don't look the same.

Fireplace firebox is huge; hard to tell from there pics and the design will have a bench in front and 2 hollow benches on either side to hold firewood.

Yes gutter guards I installed are shite and I'm ripping them all out. They needed to be crowned so they won't collapse from the debris that constantly builds up.

Reminder of the 'before'

90% done! working hard to finish up before thanksgiving!

BEFORE

AFTER

For frame of reference of how thick this pad is; look at the little plastic cable box cover attached to the brick wall above. Notice there are 5 rows of bricks under it in the first pic?

In the new pic note there's only about 1 1/2 bricks showing. So the pad is about 10 inches thick there and since this slopes downward it only gets thicker from there towards the corner of the house.

Ok, pretty much done! The dye and concrete stain colors did not turn out as expected so they will come back in March and strip the sealer and restain both concrete and bricks so ignore the mustard yellow border.

Here's what it looked like back in the summer (during bathroom remodel)

And here's the mostly finished update. Very happy with the results.

$6k for concrete pad. that included:
- truckload of sand
- truckload of gravel
- wood framing
- pvc pipes for drainage tied into gutters
- stamped & stained brick edging
- used entire cement mixer load for pad (10 cubic yards)

$5500 for fireplace which included adding the concrete benches for wood storage and seating in front. it also got the fireplace off the ground so the chimney is about 10' off the ground now.

i also paid an extra $400 to stain & seal the main concrete pad and there was a couple of other projects i had the contractor do while he was here.

looks nice you will enjoy a fireplace so much more than a fire pit(not sure if you were thinking prior), but they keep the smoke away and push the heat forward. Get yourself a cast fireback to help the heat as well

Never heard of this before but I got one on the way now. It's a big opening so I got a 28x24" fireback that you just place in back. can't wait to see how it affects the heat output.

You are exactly right. Considered a pit initially but this area gets too much wind that constantly changes direction so it's always been impossible to enjoy sitting outside. Having the flue up about 9 feet solved the problem.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. We have hated this part of our house since we moved in and it's our absolute favorite place now
