We had a smell problem a while back. Would smell it one time and then it would go away. After a few weeks, We finally narrowed it down to the hall bath toilet.
The wax gasket had fallen apart and allow gases to leak out.
Like other said, search the room for something wet or old food left hidden.

We had a smell in our house (built in the last 5 years) last week we turned the heater on and when we went back to AC it was a musky smell supposedly when you get a temperature change it gives off a smell it’s called dirty sock syndrome after a day it went away

No apparent mold on a/c ducts. I have had work done on them in the past and it was never mentioned. It's also just this one room, very close to the air handler.
I had considered the adjoining bathroom, but it's a jack and jill, and there is no smell in the bathroom or the neighboring room. That doesn't rule it out, but it seems less likely to me. If you "follow your nose" in there, it doesn't seem to emanate from that side of the room.
Kid is too young to have sticky socks. Could be dirty stuff, but the nose test also doesn't lead to any shoes or anything.
Got a mold test and it is in progress. Will see what happens with that then move on to probably termite inspection (I'm under contract, so should be gratis).

A moisture meter will be much more valuable than a mold test. IMHO every homeowner should have one. The General Tools Digital Moisture Meter MMD7NP on Amazon is a great product for under $50 and you can scan the drywall for moisture. Moisture means mold but you know the location of the damage

thanks just ordered

if nothing else, this will hopefully satisfy my wife that it's not mold (I don't think it is)

If a teenager's room, the odor is certainly teenager related.
