Tool Hoarding.....

I'm afraid I am in the midst of a problem. There is not a hand tool that I do not think I can restore.
The latest is grandpaws old chisels. Just a few randoms. Came in an old tool box that he had. Had an old oil can that is currently in pieces in evaporust.
I spend so much time on these things that I built nothing.
Anybody else with the same issue?

I just restored a 1950's Emesco belt-driven dental hand piece for my fiancée. I have a 1950's Mall drill currently awaiting a new set of brushes. I have a small pile of old hammer heads awaiting new handles. None of these things I intend to be used but I love old tools.

I love buying new tools, but I definitely don’t like restoring them. Takes too much time away from actually using them.

one divorce will cure you, all your tools will be out for garage sale for $1 each just before she serves you with the divorce papers
but seriously, man it is addictive to bring new life into old tools and they made those things with suck incredible quality and craftsmanship they are often like little works of engineering art

Also check out “hand tool rescue” on YouTube, no talking or crappy music playing in the background

I've enjoyed buying and using old hand tools for years. Lately, I've been cleaning up some solid, user-quality hand planes and tuning them up. I like to use them along with my power tools when I work on certain projects.
I have a couple newer sets of chisels, but I mostly use older ones that I have put to work over the years. There is something rewarding about using a tool that was used for a lifetime before you ever even saw it.

I mentioend it in another post, but I found a Stanley 10 1/2 plane in an antique store. Cleaned it up and redid the knob and tote. I am ready to shave some wood. LOL

Paul Sellers is another good one on youtube and his own site for learning more about older hand tools and how to use them. It is hard to beat learning from a person with 50+ years of experience. He is better for learning than Roy Underhill because he is not limited by the 20 some odd minute tv format.

I like how Paul argues that you don't need expensive tools or machines to make great furniture. The exact opposite of most youtube channels who take free equipment from manufacturers who want the exposure. Its like they are running small cabinet shops in their garage.

Yep. And the TV shows like American Woodshop are the worst about that. Their tools are always brand new with no dust or wear, and they are all from the brand(s) that sponsored them that episode. One episode they had what was probably $50,000+ of brand new Festool stuff. Lol

i just bought a early 60's craftsman metal bandsaw that i'm cleaning up. then someone gave me a big arse old vise that needs some rehab. honestly, i spend more time working ON the shop than working on other projects IN the shop.

If you clean that vise up and decide to paint it, I did one last year that turned out nice. I used electrolysis to get the rust off then cleaned it well. I used the Rustoleum "Hammered" brush on paint with a spray can primer underneath and it worked great. I like the finish on it better than my grandfather's vise that I just sprayed with rattle can primer and paint.

I cleaned up a little Wilton vise and used Rustoleum bronze hammer finish spray paint. Worked great and much better looking than the original blue.

I would have never thought to use the brush-on stuff, but I saw someone use it on Youtube. Surprisingly, there were no brush marks and it leveled out nicely with just two coats. The only problem is finding more than two or three colors. If you want something other than grey or black, you have to buy it online.
