Went to flush the toilet last night and the toilet won’t refill now. Water is on, but nothing is happening. Have a call in to a plumber, but curious if anyone on here can help me with a solution.

Is the float sinking when you flush? The water wont know to run if the float doesnt drop.

Take the lid off the tank and post a picture

Yes the float dropped like it should and everything seems to be in proper order in the tank, water just isn’t coming on to refill it.

Plumbers are not needed for fill valve on toilet, unless you are an 80 year old woman living alone. Parts are cheap and very easy to swap out.

Attempting to change out the filler valve. Feel like an idiot asking this, but Is there a trick to disconnecting the hose/tube from the toilet? I was turning on it and the valve just keep spinning in the tank. I replaced the valve of a toilet or two in my old house and didn’t have any issues getting it disconnected. Secondly, I’ve never seen a chain connected from the valve to the lever, only chain I’ve ever seen is from the lever to the flapper. Didn’t check this and spun the valve around(trying to get it out) and broke the pvc tube in the middle. How big of a headache did I just give myself?

So, you're saying the water line has been disconnected and you're trying to get the filler valve assembly out the toilet and it's spinning?
If so, get hold of the assembly in the toilet to keep it from spinning while you loosen the nut holding it to the tank from underneath.

No, I’m trying to disconnect the water line from the filler valve and it’s just spinning. I can unscrew the mounting nut with ease, but can’t get the water line off. It was also chained to the overflow tube, which broke when it spun.

Can you unscrew it from the valve at the wall then just break it at the toilet tank?

Hold the valve in the tank with your hand to keep it fron spinning while unscrewing the tube.
You can do it!
And put a towel down or small trash can to catch the water leakage.

You should be able to twist top of refill tube and look to see if you have mineral build up sorta like sand...happens in places like Tyler texas especially if water dept flushed pipes...if so just clean it and if required change part...

Appreciate the replies gents. Confirmed at lunch today that it was the fill valve. Had to get two wrenchs to undo the water line, but it was a breeze once that broke free. Put the new one in and turned on the water to confirm it worked. Turned it back off and undid the new valve as I still have a little more work to do though since the over flow tube snapped and now needs to also be replaced. Figured it’d be easier to work in the tank without the full valve there, but I now know what I’m doing and fixed it for $30 rather than $100+. Going to swap out the water line as well as the fitting got pretty chewed up when I was removing it. They had pet on there, better to go back with that or steel braided??

Your wife will like the steel braided better. It just looks nicer than PET.

Nothing really to add but I love threads like this.

Make sure to oversell the difficulty when describing the job to your wife or girlfriend. Take credit. You've earned it. You've also freed yourself from one more pesky dependence. Now go find something else to fix.
