Toilet Handle Replacement

Afternoon, I am working on replacing an old handle on one of my toilets but cannot figure out how to remove the thing. I have tried twisting and turning with no luck. I am afraid to turn on it too hard and break the porcelain toilet. Does this just need to be cut off?

If you look closely at the last picture, it looks like there is a nut inside of the housing which would indicate it just screws off. Try spraying it with some anti-corrosive spray to break it loose.

wow, you gonna have some fun with that one
that button in the center is whats left of the corroded screw that holds it on
try a side grinder on it and grind right through the arm up to the washer and it should come apart
that tank will definitely crack if you put any pressure at all on it so treat it like glass
if you are lucky it will let loose just after after you grind it passed the screw

Hold the handle with one hand and use channel locks to back the nut out
Once the nut is broke loose it should unscrew by hand the rest of the way.

Try, in this order:
- penetrating oil (not WD40) and time
- Dremel tool with cutoff wheel (smaller, less destructive version of side grinder mentioned above)
Good luck.

What's wrong with it? Handle and rod may be difficult to replace based on the shape of the tank

Just curious, any date codes stamped on the lid?
That looks like an oldie but goodie.

End up hitting it with the oscillating saw. I think I might be deaf but we got it done.

A lot of those handles have nuts that are reverse threaded, turn the nut clockwise to loosen.

Glad I didn’t break it.

Both the toilet and the lid. Hard to get replacements.

congrats, those old 5 gallon flushers might waste some water, but you never have to worry about the girls flushing their things and everything starts backing up
you can feel the whoosh when they flush
