I have a bunch of trees and shrubs to trim and need a wood chipper to shred. Ive looked into rentals and a 2 day rental costs as much as purchasing the wood chipper. Im thinking of buying simply because it makes too much sense but I realistically would only use every few years and then have to store and maintain it. Does anyone own one and how has that worked for you?

Don't have a chipper but I'm currently in the same boat with a pressure washer. If you're buying, my advice is to either split the cost with some buddies or buy it and rake in the brownie points (and free mulch) helping others out free/cheaply.

I wouldn't just buy one to use every 3-4 years

If rental is that high, Buy>Use>Sell as soon as you're done. Call a few landscaping or tree companies and see how much they would charge you to chip it up, it's probably pretty cheap if everything is ready to throw in the chipper.
Post a request on FB marketplace and you're guaranteed to have a bunch of takers

There's a wooodchip website you can request drop off. Donate some money to get on the list faster.

very little chance that a new wood chipper equivalent in size to the ones you can rent (like a vermeer or similar) will be anywhere close in price to a 2 day rental

the ones the seem affordable to you will be undersized and underpowered compared to the rental unit. Also, they break early and often

This is one item you are better off renting

I bought a Harbor Freight gas engine wood chipper and that thing has done exceptional well. I rented a DR version from Home Depot before and the blades were so dull it was almost unusable. Pulled the blades and touched them up with my grinder and a bench stone and told them they needed to be replaced when I brough it back in. The HF chipper has very sharp blades and they've stayed sharp, it will pull branches out of your hands faster than you can feed them down the chute. As for maintenance it gets the same treatment as all my seasonal equipment I don't often; after use I run it dry with the fuel valve shut, drain the fuel tank, pour some MMO in the carb, and put it away clean and dry.

I’ve been kicking the idea around lately. Mostly because I’m tired of burning. I live on 2 acres, 75% wooded. I could use a chipper every damn day. Burning sucks. Especially in August.
