Cool, but how do you keep the aphids from eating the whole damn plant?

My wife will buy a carton of ladybugs almost every spring to scatter around the garden if aphids show up and they do their job well. She gets a carton of them and she'll let some loose as she sees fit and stores the carton in the fridge to keep them alive until the needs more set free.

Just checked: You can get 1500 live ladybugs off Amazon for under $7 plus shipping.

I had a cluster of milkweed that I didn't protect during the great South LA Blizzard of 2025. Assumed they were goners, went check yesterday and they're growing back from the ground. What a rockstar.

This lady on Etsy sells a Native Louisiana Milkweed pack of seeds. She has packs for several other states too.

Thanks for the link. I ordered their La. friendly seeds earlier today and already have a couple spots in the yard prepared to plant them when they arrive.

Update us if they germinate. I planted some 3 weeks ago and nothing. I read that they need a cold period so i have some in my fridge. In a week or 2 i’ll try again.

milkweed seeds need cold stratification. the instructions should be on the packet if not, then easily found. most people do what you do and put in the fridge

I saw that too and will put the seed in my fridge for however long is necessary before putting them in the starter pots.

Do any big box or nurseries sell already grown Milkweed? I'd rather buy a few already sprouted than go through that germination process at this point.

I was at a garden center a couple weeks ago buying vegetable seed and some plants already started in the 4 packs when I overheard a customer asking the clerk if they had milkweed.

The clerk said they did have some already growing in pots and each pot was $23 and I almost choked when I heard that. I didn't ask how big the pots were or if it was several sprouts per pot since I had already decided on ordering seed.

Yeah, my packet just had the standard pic of the zones and said plant March through May. I found the info online just wasting time reading about plants.

by the way...probably the most butterfly friendly plant you can have in your yard is a wild black cherry tree (Prunus serotina). over 450 butterfly and moth species use the tree as a host.

i have several mature trees and thus seedlings (everywhere). if anyone would like me to pull up and pot some seedlings let me know. its a pretty tree requiring zero maintenance that will grow anywhere and is native to the southeast. it will grow fast and flower in a couple years and set fruit after ten years. it is also the "cherry bounce" tree if you are into that sort of thing

I was in Jefferson Feed on Jefferson Hwy. and Central Ave. last week and the clerk said they had some in stock. I'd call first to make sure they have it if you're interested.
