The great shutter debate

We are in process of completing selections for the build of our new home. My wife wants exterior shutters but I’ve never liked them and now that I’ve looked into them I realize why. The majority of shutters I see are fake cheap vinyl and not correctly sized. But it seems to get authentic, operable shutters it will cost like 10x more than vinyl. I’ve seen a ton of people adamantly say real shutters are not worth the price. There is fake hardware you can get to attach to vinyl shutters to make them look “real,” but I wonder if that is about like putting lipstick on a pig.
We don’t need the functionality of shutters, it’s purely for aesthetics.
What’s the board’s opinion on this?

I built my fake shutters out of 1x4 rough cut cypress. Got about $500 in 8 windows

Same here. This is a classy look.

Aluminum powered shutters are the way to go and work. Do it cheap if they are just for show

Get aluminum storm shutters that look like normal shutters you can close when a storm is approaching.

build your own if you want them.
and i'll point out that only one house in a neighborhood down in Houma had the windows shattered out of about 100 homes. The one that had shutters and closed them. Shutters ripped off the walls and broke all the windows.
long story short, if you are going to use shutters for hurricane protection, you better secure those bitches really good.

We have shutters but like several above have noted, shutters in South Louisiana aren't just for decoration. We can close and latch ours for storm protection. If you are going to have shutters, I agree with you, don't put up decorative plastic crap. Put up shutters that you can use to protect your windows during a storm.

I've been having the same debate with my wife. I don't want to spent a weekend putting shutters that can't be used on the windows. She doesn't want to spend the money on operational shutters.
