But I’d shoot for much higher than that.

Agree.

From my experience I'd say 8K lux at the least for more developed plants.

I read somewhere that 50k is the maximum amount that plants can use, which is similar to a partly cloudy day.

The one I have puts out like 25k at the center, 10k towards the outside. Amazon

But not growing many plants this year so it does fine.

This year I plan to start my first garden . We are going to try a 4x12 raised garden. Will try to start planting on Sunday . Going to try radishes , squash , Zucchini, onions, bell peppers, carrots, broccoli , corn and cucumbers. Starting with a soil mixture of compost, peat moss and good soil.

40k Light

This is what I am growing with right now. This is my upgrade from the Fluorescent set I had last year. It puts out a decent amount of heat and is SUPER bright. My plants are looking good so far. They only sprouted a week or so ago though. I spray Superthrive every week and do Miracle Grow Starter fertilizer once a week as well. I had to rebuy my Jimmy Nardello seeds. The seeds left from last year never germinated this season.

Read the lsu planting guide and watch plant spacing, that’s a lot of stuff for a 4x12

Any recommendations on grow bags? Did fairly well with potatoes in a huge pot. Naturally when I went to flip it to get the potatoes, it cracked. I’ve lost too many rows of potatoes over the years due to excessive rains to plant in ground again.

I have liked them but they get destroyed after a few years for me (could be my kids of dogs)

They dry out quick

I finally got around to modifying my garden. It was too wide before and I wanted it deeper.

I wanted to be able to reach in without stepping inside but didn’t want to lose much square footage. The old one was 16x8. This one is 16x10 with the 5x6 walk in area. I actually ended up with 2 more sqft.

I used 6ft cedar boards and leftover 2x4s from building the fence. I’ll probably add a few more in the middle of the boards for added support.

I learned my lesson from last time and went overboard on the weed barrier. My Bermuda was constantly creeping into my bed.

Tomorrow I’ll be adding a hexagon bed next to it for the bean/cucumber teepee. You’ll also noticed the strawberry plant hanging on the fence. My boys are obsessed with the garden so I thought I’d get them something they can look after too. Had to hang it out of reach of the chickens.

As soon as they get back in stock I’ll be getting a soil monitor that links up to my weather station.

Great idea. My son asked me the other day if I could make them their own little garden to plant their own plants. I was like “what a great idea! Why didn’t I think of that?” So, I have more work cut out for me!

Ummm.... please share. What are we talking about here?

ETA: Also, has anyone ever used the Alaska Fish Fertilizer? Smells great, let me tell you. My soil test revealed that I have plenty of nutrients in my soil, so I just wanted an organic nitrogen source. At 5-1-1 I was thinking that should work pretty good. Anyone have experience with it and what’s your opinion of the stuff?

This is the weather station on the pole behind the bed. I can pair it with this soil moisture sensor. It’s been out of stock for over a month now.

BUT when I looked it up just now to link I saw that it was back in stock so I appreciate you asking!

Truth - they plant it and pick a few flowers. I tend to mine and theirs

Right now I’m arguing that we plant vegetables first before flowers that one picked out. The other one picked out pumpkins- so they could carve them for Halloween

Beyond soil moisture (which you obviously want) thoughts on the extra features compared to Ambient 2902?

Had about decided on the 2902 until I saw your post.

If I were buying for myself, I’d probably go with the 2902. The only monitors the 2000 has that the 2902 doesn’t that I care about is the lightning detector and soil moisture sensor. I could care less about moon phases and those other features.

To me it doesn’t justify the cost. Including purchase of the sensors your looking at a $180 swing. The only reason I have the 2000 is because it was a gift.

I’ve been very happy with it though. It’s been flawless in reporting. I like that I can send data to weather underground and see it on there. (KLAIOWA11)

Idk if you have iPhone or not but if you do when you get your station download the PWS Monitor app. I like using it for quick looks as opposed to the ambient app which shows you a lot more info but requires some scrolling.

The strawberries and blackberries should be fine. As for the blackberries, you may lose the tips of the canes if touching the ground. This is what I need to get done today, pruning the old canes that produced last year and re-staking the good canes. These things are starting to grow crazy.

Worried about my satsuma, lemon and kumquat trees with the chance of cold weather coming in. Already taking a chance of trying to grow them here in AL.

Seeds started early for the first time. Got the 40k lux light mentioned in one of the post above, think it will work well.

As always, thanks to all for the info shared in this thread. How some things can motivate one.

That’s reassuring. I know strawberries can handle some pretty low temps. Wasn’t too sure how low the blackberries could handle. There were talks of us potentially being in the teens with wind chills even lower. Looks like the models have backed off of that extreme, so that’s even more reassuring.

Thanks. Something else added to my long wish list.

I love it. I’m always checking it.

I knocked out the other bed for the teepee. It ended up being bigger than I thought but oh well!

Shoot, you’re gonna turn your whole back yard into a garden before long. That’s what my wife always tells me I’m doing. To which I reply “what’s wrong with that?”

This is fantastic. I love it.

Side note: anyone know a good warming pad for seedlings? (if it's even necessary)
