I may try rooting some suckers from my beefmaster plants for a fall crop.

They will take if placed in some small pots with good potting soil and keeping them moist while they set roots. I've done the very same thing many times and it has always worked out well.

I just freeze my whole, and the peel comes off real easy when they thaw.

I tried that once and it works really well. I find it takes up a little more space, though. I can pack more into a gallon ziplock by blanching and peeling first. It's a little more work, but it saves me a lot of freezer space.

LSUlefty, what brand of dehydrator do you have? I’ve been wanting one with wire racks.

Got it for Christmas. Works great.

Got a bee question for you. So, I installed my bee package on April 4th. Yesterday, they swarmed. That’s less than 10 weeks. I used the 80% rule and added boxes when needed. I am two deeps and one super high already. I added the super 2 weeks ago. Didn’t see any signs of swarm prep when I looked in. Everything I’ve read seems to say it’s pretty unheard of for a package colony to swarm in the first year. Have you ever heard of this happening? Was my colony just kicking that much arse?

I opened the box today and there were a few swarm cells. One was chewed open with a dead queen inside. And we were able to hear a queen piping somewhere in the brood box. So we seem to have a virgin queen roaming the box. We didn’t bother digging further into the box after that. Especially since the bees were acting extra aggressive and stung me on the hands 4 times. I just can’t believe this colony swarmed after less than 10 weeks. I was in no way prepared for it.

My wife roasted tomatoes, 2 little onions, peppers( jalapeños, bell peppers, dragon, chili pequins) and garlic in the oven with olive oil. A true hodge lodge from the garden. Peeled the tomatoes and peppers. Put it all in a blender with cumin, salt, pepper, and cilantro. She doesn’t measure anything so you’ll have to play with it depending on your taste.

Our son likes it with a squeeze of lime juice.

Been picking at least 5 cucumbers and about 25 yard long beans daily for several days now and still about 3 weeks out from okra coming in.

I've got 25 tomatoes on my table and countertop in varying stages of ripening and I'm eating at least 2-3 tomatoes a day right now and can't keep up with them. Celebrity and black krim are doing well right now but will be fading in a couple more weeks as it is really heating up now.

I had to pull the dozen or so zucchini and yellow crook necks due to squash vine borers taking them out once again. No matter what I do, they get into the stems and eat the plants up. At least squash are cheap in the stores right now.

Grew corn last year and found it was not really worth it for the amount produced and Rouses puts it on sale sometimes for as little as $.10 an ear for bi-color sweet corn, so I just buy it now and freeze what I don't use.

What I can't understand is okra being over $3 a lb. in the supermarkets even when the season is in full swing. That stuff grows like a weed and produces heavily for months on end.

I was going to comment on your last pic of capped brood (middle pic), but didn’t want to come off as a know it all. I’m still learning every day as well. However, that frame was loaded with brood and what little cells that were open, were back filled with nectar. So, you either had a strong flow going and they ran out of room, or combination of feeding with a flow on. It’s a tricky balance to learn. I did the same thing my first year.

A good rule of thumb that has helped me is 4 frames of bees will peak in 7-8 weeks.

EXAMPLE: I had 4 frames of brood (April 16) on hives that I wanted to ramp for Tallow flow that starts 1St of June in my area. That puts them peaking May 21, so I pulled a frame of brood and shook nurse bees into new Nucs or weaker hives to “slow down”.
I want hives to peak 1-2 weeks after start of a large flow.

Those hives are slap full of honey with backfilled brood frames similar to yours. Hopefully I can keep the wheels on them till the end of this tallow flow.

If you have a virgin running around, I’d leave her alone till she’s mated (around the 24th laying)

If they run out of room, it’s gonna happen. They can fill a super quickly on a good flow. I run all deeps. Last Friday put an empty deep of drawn comb on. This Friday it’s slap full.

And yes. Your colony was kicking arse. Those pics you posted, that queen was killing it.

Also, I’m sure you’re sick about it. Ive been there….every season just learn from it and keep at it.

So I guess my next question is, what now? Wait a couple of weeks to see if I have a mated queen laying eggs? If not, re-queen?

I’m actually not that bothered by it. I’m a little upset cause that was a hell of a good queen that left. I just had no idea this could happen so quickly.

What are the odds I lose the hive over this?

Went to the camp for the weekend, horn worms pretty much decimated my tomatoes. The little bastards work fast.

Yea. Just wait till she’s mated. At least she will come from good genetics. If she fails, then yeah introducing a mated queen would be next. Could you lose the hive altogether? Yes. You could also have a secondary swarm with that virgin. But let’s stay positive

I’ll hope for the best. There’s still a very healthy population in there. And it was really awesome hearing the new queen piping.

ETA: A few pics. My wife likes to be the photographer when we open the hive. Here’s a frame from the super. Full of honey. Also a good bit of drones crawling around.

We still have some brood

Here we have some swarm cells surrounded by drone brood and what I believe is a a dead queen (far left in photo). Looks like the side of the cell was chewed out. I’ve read the new queen will chew open other queen cells and sting them to kill them.

Those things are the devil. I haven’t had a problem with them in a long time. But I spray thuricide at the first sign of any caterpillar damage. So I guess that keeps them in check.

First trouble I’ve had with them this year. Usually just use sevindust, but from late Friday to this morning they pretty well destroyed two 6’ better boys.

Cool pic. The cell on the right is where one hatched. See the capping hanging. If you could have caught the hive before swarming, you could have just split into a few hives with all those cells. They say swarm cells make the best queens.

Finally dry enough to mow and the dam zero turn blows the hydro belt. Thing just stops moving. Decided to burn some brush piles instead.

Me and the wife wanted to get out of the house yesterday so we took the kids driving down some back roads. I ended up passing a lot with a ton of hives. Maybe 2 dozen or so.

I'm not sure if they are active though. The area looked upkept for a while and was starting to get over grown with weeds.

However spending a lot of time outside this weekend I did see a couple of honey bees flying around so they have to be reaching the garden.

Edit: I'm almost positive I found the lot on google earth and none of the hives were there in the satellite picture which was right after Laura so they have to be kept up still. It is also 3.5 miles from me as the crow flies.
