I remember reading a while back that giving your plants a lot of nitrogen will make you more likely to have an aphid problem. So I did a little searching and found this. Controlling Aphids Naturally
So, try backing off of the Nitrogen fertilizer a little bit if you've been feeding a lot.
quote:
Nitrogen plays a very important part in a plants growth as well as the content of its sap. Soils with excessively high nitrogen create very fast growing plants. This leads to rapid cell wall growth, which are elongated, thinner and much easier for the piercing mouth-parts of an aphid to penetrate than normal. The plant sap will also be high in nitrogen and will be especially attractive for the aphid. It is very important to understand that high nitrogen sap will be lower in overall sugar content – also known as brix – because nitrogen forms amino acids and proteins – such as chlorophyll – but specifically needs magnesium, phosphorus and carbon to form sugars. This can’t happen if there is excess nitrogen, as there aren’t enough of the other elements to form those sugars. Once the soil is amended with the correct nutrients, the plant will increase the brix/sugar levels and the aphids will die from sucking high sugar content plant sap as it is deadly – aphids can’t digest the sugars with no pancreas and thus die.

I'll be damned.

Picture time!
Roma’s
Beefmasters
Eggplant
Sweet Red Marconi Pepper
Cayenne
Prime Ark Freedom Blackberries
Mammoth Sunflowers
Picked a handful of strawberries this morning. More on the way up!
Arbequina Olive Tree is flowering
Rain is gone, sun is out, time to forage.
So far I have no aphids or any other insect/caterpillar issues. Cucumbers are slowly growing. They’re on their third set of leaves. History tells me they should start really taking off soon.

Do y’all recommend pinching blossoms on blueberry bushes in the first couple years to establish the root systems?

that's a lot of Eggplant. lol. One is enough for us.

I have a feeling I’ll be giving a lot away.
But I’ll fry up as much as I can.

I've tried frying Eggplant but it's always greasy. How do you do it?

Baba Ghanoush freezes extremely well.
eta: hint several at a time on the grill

Nuke it some in a microwave first.
Especially if used in layering like with a lasagna or moussaka. You can often omit the frying or at least limit using so much oil.
eta: also like grilling

You got a recipe? We order that from Zeus every now and then and it’s good stuff.

You got a recipe?
Grill eggplant until flat turning over occasionally it'll appear burnt. Just directly on grill. I seem to usually flip/turn it in thirds. Roast your garlic at same time it'll make it especially good.
Rest/cool the eggplant until you can handle, then remove the skin from eggplant by scraping with back edge of knife against cutting board. If I encounter an exceptional amount of seeds I'll toss them otherwise they seem to be ok.
Next it's just smashing then up with a fork. It's better than a blender/processor to me (and her) to have a little texture left. Usually just do it in the same bowl as mixing. A couple tablespoons of tahini, salt, the mashed garlic, and lemon or lime juice completes. I like lime better, some people will add a little cumin or paprika, and pink Himalayan salt seems to be better.
Most recipes seem to call for too much tahini for my taste; however if 2 tablespoons is not enough it's easy to add more. Have never measured any of the parts before as it's pretty flexible and easy to modify to taste.
Enjoy - it makes great dip for sliced cucumbers and everyone loves it when you show up. Add a platter of sliced tomatoes w/sweet basil and EVO and you'll have freinds ready to plant a garden next year.

Mine have been on same amount of leaves from when i planted them 3-4 weeks ago...
They’ve about doubled in size in the past 3-4 days with all the rain and heat/sun.

Everything’s off to a great start.

Most everything is doing great in my garden except okra. I've planted it twice and had it washed away before they broke ground by torrential rains.
Then my ground is so saturated that water from rains stands between rows for a couple days time, and that is not really good for root systems as too much can cause root rot and plant loss.
I can now see I will need a few cubic yards of topsoil to add to my plot later this summer to get ready for my fall/winter garden. Too late to add it now since most of the garden is planted.

I just got back from fishing out of the country for 9 days. My mom monitored the garden for me while I was gone. Everything blew up. Picked my first zucchini and squash this morning. Cucumbers took a little damage from the cold front but they’re looking okay. I’ll post some photos later.
