Tell me about birdhouses

The wife (no pics) mentioned she'd like to have a birdhouse in the backyard. I know just about nothing about them. I've seen people mount birdhouses on poles, which is the route I'd like to go.
What type are good for the New Orleans area?
What's upkeep like? Is there any upkeep at all?
I'd rather something that's already assembled, or a kit that comes with everything to assemble it. I'm not looking to build one from scratch.
Also something $50 or less if possible.

I put mine on a few poles, spray painted the metal poles matte hunter green to blend in with landscape, and spray painted baffles the same.
Boxes are wood and I just hose them out if a nest is empty.

Depends on the birds you want and the surroundings when you choose height (google this for your birds), but mine are Eastern Bluebird boxes and are about 7 feet out of the ground. 9 foot poles with 2 feet stuck into ground.
Made brackets and bolted the boxes on.
They are Eastern facing for morning sun and away from trees/bushes that predators can use to get in, but below tall limbs because bluebirds love to keep watch above the boxes.

Setup looks similar to this, but I have more plain wooden boxes and my poles are painted matte dark hunter green.

Other things you should consider. Do you want an internet camera and app that lets you see the visiting birds and even identifies them? They are cool but will run you over $100.
Are squirrels going to be a problem for you? My area of New Orleans has a lot of live oaks and squirrels are everywhere. They will get into any birdhouse. A baffle may work, but they are ugly.

I pulled the trigger on a Wren birdhouse and a pole with a predator baffle. We'll see how well that works come spring I guess.

I live in Metairie. My backyard is pretty big. I don't want to place the birdhouse in the middle of the yard. Will keeping it 8-10 feet away from the fence be an ok location?

This isn't about birdhouses themselves but study up on the seed you buy.
There are different ones and what you put out matters pertaining to the type of birds you draw.

Not really - but it does encourage them to come into your yard.
Set them up and if they don't get used, put out a couple feeders using the right food and some suet cake feeders.

I been studying on this as well. We keep two feeders pretty active and the cardinals and doves love them.
