We were given a 5’ fiberglass sugar kettle from a neighbor that’s moving and didn’t have a place for it at her new house. It’s water tight save for a 3/4” hole for a hose on the side, I will install a bulkhead fitting and plug it.

It’s old and faded so i want to paint it. I had read here once that someone used the spray in bedliner from Lowe’s. Would that work?

In general, want to have a small pump and fountain in it and maybe some Lilly pads. What do I need to do to keep the water clean? I assume fish will make it dirty.
Note: it will only get Sun in the morning.

Liner spray might discolor but don’t quote me on that, never done it. Maybe black flex seal spray or brush on?

That is too small for most fish. You could do some small natives but none of the traditional goldfish or koi.

Negative on the flex seal. Doesn’t hold on the fiberglass surface of a kettle pot. Fiberglass repair kit with the spray on liner. Maybe.

I use a water clarifier and algaecide from Home Depot to keep our kettle pot clean.

you could keep mollies in that size kettle. Pretty fish and easy to keep alive

Goldfish will absolutely thrive in there. As long as they’re nit too big or overcrowded. Need shade and cover. Lily pads are great.
We have several cattle tanks that size or thereabouts and they have goldfish in them. They will clarify your water. What used to be green, murky water is now clear enough to read a newspaper on the bottom.

Fish will make it dirty. Plants will keep it clean.

You are working with a very small space but look up what a bog is for small outdoor ponds. If you can somehow run the water through a small structure which is basically some gravel holding your water plants, the water will be fine.

Water hyacinth will be good and they just float. They dont need substrate
