anyone noticing this in Baton Rouge area?
Good thing of course , mosquitoes are way down. But I've never seen so many swarming like this before. Any ideas why?

dragonflies are predators
sign of a healthy ecosystem. If you really want to see them in force, plant wildflowers…I have to fight my way thru them sometimes at my house

I need some to migrate to New Roads to help with the white flies.

I like watching them when they swarm like that. It usually corresponds with a hatch of flies or gnats, sometimes mosquitoes, but I've never seen a mosquito swarm trigger the dragonfly swarm. Fungus flies that develop after a wet stretch are usually what gets them going around me, also midges when they swarm.
One of the coolest aerial warfare battles I've witnessed was when the gnats swarmed and brought the dragonflies. The Purple Martins were still here, having not left for the communal roosts yet. They picked up on the activity and started going after the dragonflies, which they love to eat. Then, the Tree Swallows joined in. It was carnage! Dragonflies and Swallows going after gnats, Martins going after dragonflies. Darting, diving, cutting, gliding......all the while the large cloud of gnats would part and move as if in a hivemind, moving as one. There were no crashes, no accidents. It was all life or death, but looked perfectly choreographed.
That was 2013 or 14, I think, and is still the biggest dragonfly swarm I've ever seen. It went on for at least a couple of hours, and I got to watch it all from my front yard.

A couple years ago there were tons of them that gathered in my backyard veg. garden. I had dozens of plants that I used metal stakes to help support them and every day, usually later in the afternoon, they would land on top of the stakes and just sit there. Funny thing was, they would ALL face in the same direction.
For some reason I have tons of lizards, geckos and skinks in the yard for the past couple years. My cat is fond of hunting them and bringing me one from time to time to let me know he's on duty.
