I am looking for a new set of patio doors. I have settled on French style doors. There are a ton of options. Which are better, steel doors or fiberglass? Also, I see some that have the blinds between the panes of glass...art]e those dependable?

My back door is a steel door with shades in between the glass. 16 years opened and closed at least 20 times a day and no issues. Front door is a Fiberglass that takes direct afternoon sun, no issues with it either. DONT GET WOOD!

I have steel French Style patio doors - they do rust over time, I also vote fiberglass.

Get fiberglass with a composite frame and trim. It's not much more than a standard primed fingerjoint or no rot frame. It's basically an indestructible unit. As others mentioned a steel door will eventually rust especially if it's near a pool. As far as the internal blinds I would shy away from them. The reason being is if the blinds ever break or don't function correctly, you will have to replace the whole entire glass insert. They usually hold up pretty well, but there is the chance that they don't.

We built a house this past year. All exterior doors on the house and the doors on the storeroom attached to an open carport are Fiberglass recommended by both our contractor and LSU AgCenter Lahouse. No shrink no swell no rot. We got textured and stained and coated with marine grade varnish. Looks just like wood. Two rear doors on the house have the built in blinds. Of the people I know who have the built in blinds they are satisfied and have had no problems.

I've seen steel doors dent pretty easily and they are prone to rust near the bottoms by the weather stripping.

Another vote for fiberglass.
