I think I'm on the right track just want to make sure.

Our shower drain got really slow so we removed the cover and got out the hair and gunk we could by hand which made it 10x worse. It seems like in doing that it somehow pushed the clog deeper somehow.

Right now when I turn the shower on I can literally hear the space filling before the water comes up through my drain.

My idea today is to basically go to home depot and get a 3-6 ft toilet auger and clean it out that way...that should do it huh? or am I looking at something else going on here?

UPDATE: $35 hand crank RYBI auger from HD was exactly what I needed. Draining like new.. thanks gents

When our shower baked up years ago, the clog was way down the line. Hopefully you can get to it with a residential snake, but if not and in our case, we had to get a plumber out to clear the line. The clog was from makeup wipes our then teenage daughter thought she could flush.

Honestly I'm worried about that too....but like I said I can literally hear the pipe filling up for a few seconds before I see the backed up water, so I'm hoping 6 ft of snake can get it done

I'd try a $36 drum auger first.

Shower clogs are usually mostly hair, and a mechanical snake is the best way to pull that out.

If your shower is a tub, you'll need to snake through the side overflow plate, being careful not to damage any stopper linkage under the plate.

Why not just pour some Draino down there?

Because that has not been effective

They sell the hand crank 25' snakes at big box hardware stores for around $30.

My main sewage lines were clogged with tree roots and the showers backing up were the first indicator. The other indicator was my toilets bubbling. Do you have any large trees between the house and the street?

Tree roots are common only if the exterior pipes are cast iron, clay or Orangeburg (tar).

Homes built after the late 1970's usually have PVC pipes that rarely get clogged with roots.

The exceptions are unusual settling of the soil - which would also cause cracks in your interior drywall - or a big tree close to the pipe with a root that's powerful enough to bend the plastic pipe to the point of cracking.

PVC pipes do commonly bend with settling soil, causing bellies that you can clean with a sewer jetter.

Welcome to my Monday. We are on septic and the system was completely clogged. My wife drained the second floor jacuzzi tub and it ended up coming out of the toilet on the first floor and flooding the unfinished part of the basement. Complete shite show.

Plumber had to remove another toilet on the first floor and snake it. We were clogged with baby wipes. I am installing an outside clean out access.

With clogs I can’t reach I’ve poured a half bottle of drano in there and then poured a pot of boiling water behind it. Usually works.

That 20" white $2 plastic thing that looked like a spine has always done the job for me.

Would encourage you to install a bi-directional cleanout near the house so that you can choose whether to run the snake or jetter uphill or downhill.

When there's a clog in your main drain, if the cleanout is flooded you feed the drain cleaner downhill. If the cleanout is dry you feed it uphill under the house.

Without this bi-directional cleanout it can be tough to choose the direction when the cleanout is flooded.
