Does anyone have any experience using rubber mulch for a children's playground area? We're putting up a swingset in our backyard in an area that currently has home depot bag mulch. Do people prefer rubber over regular mulch? Is it worth the cost? Any downsides that I should be aware of?

That rubber shite gets really really hot In Summer time. It can have harmful chemicals. Your kids are basically playing in shredded car tires.

Agree that the rubber gets ridiculously hot in our climate. Wood chips/wood mulch is definitely cooler.

My kid's playground at daycare has these.

As they deteriorate, they leave black residue all over them. Tire dirt, basically. It's pretty nasty stuff.

Probably more expensive but I’m positive they make rubber mulch specifically for playgrounds that isn’t made out of old tires.

Avoid rubber mulch on a playground in the south. It gets very hot in the sun. There are other playground surfaces that are better.

Partially true. Majority, 90%+ rubber mulch product is made from recycled tires, however a very small amount is made from new tire "buffings"...but still tire material

I had mulch all around the kids playset until it dawned on me that the grass was softer, cooler and didn’t get all over them while they played.

Looked better too.

The mulch is there to break their fall. There are guidelines for mulch thickness based on fall height.

Just saying - the grass is softer than the mulch for breaking a fall.

I spent about a month getting rid of it from a house I moved into. I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone. I still have bits of it everywhere. It’s not going to make the difference between a broken arm or not but it will certainly trash your yard forever.

Our church has it in the playground area for insurance reasons.

It is FOREVER in their shoes and clinging to socks and falling off.

Not a big fan.
