Cub Cadet,
I've owned two and beat the crap out of both of them. They are the TIMEX of mowers. Not sexy but "take a licken and keep on ticken, or mowing.....

Also don't buy at a box store go to a dealer.

Go to a John Deere dealer and look at the X series if you want a tractor style mower. The E series along with most everything at a box store are made cheaper to compete with the Murrays, Troy Bilts, etc.

Go to a Kubota or John Deere dealer.

I vote for Kubota but get ready to pay! JD from a dealer would be my next choice. The ones at the big box stores are only slightly better if at all than the other brands the big box stores have.
The Kubota and JD dealer probably have some decent commercial grade trades too.
My last one was a traded commercial Exmark that I got 10 years out of, currently have a traded Kubota diesel. Only went diesel bc the price was good on the trade, and not having to deal with a carb and gas issues every season has been great. Paid 3500 for a 500 hour 54 inch ZD221.

Stay away from these.
Go directly to the dealer.
Cub Cadet and other manufacturers have a retail or 'value-line'
model(s) which is not made as well as the ones sold at the dealer.
Assuming you don't want to go with a Zero-turn mower, and have an average sized yard go with something like a Cub Cadet XT2 series, perhaps the LX46 model I think this is the one with a better engine.
Consider the mower deck too, stay way from a 'stamped deck' and go with the fabricated steel deck, 11 gauge should be sufficient. Plus, the pulley system is of better quality.
Do yourself a favor and spend a few extra hundred dollars and go with the better quality.

Nope, not on mine. Auto choke sucks.

I had an old Forest Gump Snapper that I had to just give away. It was so old that I was embarrassed to ride it, but it still ran great.

As did I, given to me by a cousin, and it was old when I got it, and I used it for 7 years before replacing it with an identical snapper model in 2005, with which I’ve never had an issue with in all that time - removed the carb once to clean it, and replaced the transmission drive wheel which is a cheap normal wear item that takes 15 min to replace.
That Snapper is still being used by a friend who I’ve given it to on indefinite loan in case I want it back. I’ve done so much landscaping to my yard, in the past 4 years it was taking me longer to cut the yard avoiding landscape obstacles with the Snapper than with my self propelled Honda mower.

I went through this 2 years ago. Weighed all of the concerns below about box store mowers and whatnot. End of the day I settled on the John Deere E120 from Home Depot. Lowe's carries the E100, E110, and E130, but the 120 had a 42" deck with a v twin motor. I went to a dealer and looked at their similar rigs and honestly the differences I noticed weren't enough to justify the price difference. The E120 still has a metal transmission and other critical components.
The Husq and Craftsman tractors (once Lowe's bought the Craftsman rights) felt like value line products while the Deere did not. Cub Cadet would have been my second choice.
So far I put heavier Gator blades on her and she has performed like a champ for the last two years. I have a half acre.
My $0.02
