good morning guys

I’m moving shortly and am looking at building a few things (coffee table, end tables, etc) to save some money. I’m pretty handy but have never done any type of precision wood work like furniture.

Anyhow, seems that the one thing I really need to purchase foremost is a miter saw. I don’t know much about what I’m seeing online so I’m coming to y’all for help and recommendations based on my needs. Again, this is just for some small projects here and there so I don’t need top of the line stuff.

I’m also open to buying a used one if that’s an option.

There’s 10 different saws on that page

Is a sliding saw necessary for what I’m trying to do? Also, I see 10” and 12”.

Depends on how large the pieces of wood you need to cut, that will determine the blade size and if the sliding is needed (you won't need sliding)

I’ve heard great things about the Hitachi miter saw for $99. It’s on Amazon. What I’ve heard is buy that and a good blade and you’ve got a great beginner set up

That’s what I was coming back to post.

Get a cheap (good quality) saw. Either 12” fixed or 10” sliding. Throw away the blade it comes with and get two new ones. A fine tooth for trim and rough cut for 2xs.

I've also heard good things about the hitachi. I've been looking at that one, or this Craftsman at Lowes. I like how the Craftsman folds up and puts away easily. Reviews are good for it.

Here's the Hitachi for $99. Will this with better blades do what I need it to do? All the sliding saws are a couple hundo more. So the 10" is basically the with of material I can cut? I'd like to be able to cut 12" boards

Hitachi 15amp- 10" single bevel

Also, any recommendation on blade brands?

I use my slide all of the time. I'm probably in a different category than the OP though. Never understood why you would cheap out on a tool if you plan on using it more than 2 or 3 times. The bigger the mitre saw and longer the slide the better for me.

But yes, absent of paying $400 or more for a saw, a budget mitre with a good blade should get the OP far enough.

yea the 12" dual bevel from HF is plenty. yea it doesnt have a super powerful motor but put a good blade on it and just cut slower and it is great for what you pay.

Get the HFcoupons app. right now that have a "good" coupon for is for 140. I believe it has gotten as fare down as 99 bucks.

No keep the blade it comes with for rough work, invest in a good trim blade for finer work. FYI, Hitachi blades are good as are DeWalt's in miter saws.

thats the 10" the 10 gets to 99 regularly as the 12" gets to 119. But every once and a while you can get the 12" for 99 i believe.

You won't be able to cut the full width of the blade. Generally about half. I have a 10" saw and I can cut roughly 5" wide, 6" if I raise the board by putting it on top of a 2x. If you want to cut wider than that, you'd have to go sliding.

OP, you need to look into reconditioned tools too. They carry the same warranty as new.

Hitachi 12" dual bevel miter saw $120.

I read the same things recommending the Hitachi. Ended up finding one at a pawn shop, very lightly used, for $40. Great buy

I own the 10" Hitachi mentioned several times above. No complaints here.
