Question: Installing Quick Connect and Valve to Gas Meter

For a tri-fuel portable gen, have any of you baws ever installed or hired a plumber to set up a quick connect and secondary valve to your gas meter on the side of your house? Is it really that simple or are there some cons or potential problems that could arise? I have a buddy who's a DIY and he's swears by this approach but I would feel more comfortable having a plumber do it if they're even agreeable to it. Thoughts?

Your T is on the wrong side. It should be BEFORE the meter.

How expensive was the connector and hose? I would have gone with this same setup, but the cost was crazy high (like x10 the cost of alternatives).
To the OP, there are multiple threads on this. I'll do a quick search and attach links if I find them.

What’s keeping the neighborhood kids from turning that ball valve on and blowing your house up? Should have a lock on it IMO.

Appreciate it. I bought the 30-foot hose, and the cost is much less than what I quoted when I was last looking for this. It will be nice to have a safer and quicker connection.

I paid too. 200 . It was under the house and he had to cut a flexible gas line. Required special fittings.
Much easier to pay while i am out making 2x that. Plumbers gotta eat too.
Got ball valve & plug. No neighborhood here.

Not sure what kind of neighborhood you live in but in mine no one is walking up under my kitchen windows and turning a gas valve on my meter.
ETA: That said, the quick connect is sealed until the male insert depresses the spring seal inside of it. Same as with an air compressor hose quick connect.

Yeah, you can turn the valve on all day and nothing would happen. Only opens the poppet when the male adapter is installed. I mean what's to stop a neighborhood kid with access to a wrench. Could easily do the same or worse damage.
I was lucky and had a Gas line run to my patio by the builders for a future outdoor grill option. Just added a nipple with valve and quick connect. Have a 25' hose on the generator.

Is that a 1/2" line? Any issues with not enough volume to power your generator?

Not sure what his answer will be but I learned through this process that you don't need as much gas as you'd think, so long as you have adequate pressure. My load block on my regulator is almost completely closed. I opened it 1.5 turns to accommodate a load. I'm getting 1/4 psi after the meter.

EDIT: Your generator may run fine with an under-sized line, but if you start to load it up, then it's possible you could starve it.

Tge stub out the wall was 3/4" and it was necked down to 1/2". I was able to remove the 1/2" replumb to 3/4" all the way to the quick connect. No volume issues and this is literally the very end of the gas piping on the exact opposite side of the house from the meter.
