Pre-Emergent Timing

This is my first year getting into lawn care. When should I be putting down my fall pre-emergent? Planning on laying down some prodiamine. I live in the NOLA area. I know it should be as soil temps near 70. Should this just be based on the 5 day averages? Seems like these averages bounce around a bit, and it looks like we're about to get a cold front which will drop us below 70 for a few days. But then we'll be back up into the mid-70s by the end of the week. Should I just apply now? Or should I wait for 5 day average to stabilize around low 70s?
Or should I just stop overthinking and lay down some prodiamine today?

Yes

It’s hard to be perfect so would you rather be early or late?

I put it down about a week ago. Figure it’s close enough.

I'm in the same area and I applied it last weekend.

Go ahead and apply it. I did my yard last week.

Absolutely. I put down pre-emergent 3 to four times a year. You have to get rid of the bad stuff before the good grass will prosper. You will never do anything to kill mother nature indefinitely. Trial and error. Just remember what you did when you screw up and don't do that again.

Wow....do you use different types for every application? or the same one every time?

MSMA. Every time.
Just so BankLSU and others are not confused, MSMA is not a pre-emergent but a post-emergent herbicide, it is no longer labeled for use on residential lawns (meaning technically it’s a violation of federal law to use in that manner), and the herbicide will damage St Augustine and Centipede lawns, but is safe for use on Bermudagrass and Zoysia.

Yeah, like Craw said. MSMA is not a pre em. Few people have Bermuda and zoysia in south La so I hope you’re doing it right.

I just put new sod down about 3 weeks ago (finally able to get to my lawn after rebuilding the house from Ida)
Am I able to put down pre emerg now or should I wait due to it being newer sod?
I am completely new to lawn care, so if you can explain it to a child, that will suffice for me.

Wait until next spring. The labels on pre-emergent herbicides are clear as to not use them on newly sodded or sprigged lawns.

Fantastic. I’ve never used them and thus have never read the labels. Thanks for the insight.
