Pre-emergent question

I’ve been spraying VBW, spurge, nutsedge and other pesky weeds in my newly regenerated yard since last year’s destruction due to the dry spell and heavy machinery running through my yard last winter. They are still hanging around and I’m working on neutralizing it, but do I also need to spread pre-emergent going into the fall/winter or is that a waste since it’s still pretty present/prevalent?

Though pre-emergent won’t help with VBW or nutsedge, it will greatly assist with numerous cool season weeds - there is no downside to using it - I’d apply if I was you as you are trying to get your lawn back in shape. Not a waste at all as there plenty winter weeds seeds that will begin to germinate at soil temperatures of 70 F.

That’s what I thought, thank you. In Baton Rouge, which pre-emergent would you suggest? I’m assuming I should spread this weekend. St. Aug and Bermuda, for the most part, in my yard.

Also, planning to cut grass tomorrow afternoon once the sun has had a chance to soak up most of the water from the storm. Spread after the cut?

I put out some dimension this afternoon. Not sure that it’s all that great but it’s cheap, easy to find at an Ace Hardware, and easy to spread granules.

I’d wait until the last week of Sept-first week of Oct. It’s a bit early to apply it now. If you are fairly new to this I’d suggest either Prodiamine or Dimension - effective, good value pre-emergents. Some of us use Specticle which is very expensive, upfront cost, as it controls some problem weeds that we have in our lawns that Prodiamine & Dimension won’t - Doveweed for example. Some others use Simazine.
You can use all these on the 4 warm season grasses.
Since you are in Baton Rouge, Site One Landscape Supply in the Industrialplex has good pricing on granular Prodiamine (LESCO Sonewall) & Dimension (LESCO Dimension). But you can also buy these at larger retail garden centers in town, Cleggs & Louisiana Nusery come too mind, but there are others.

I think it’s a bit early to apply for cool season weeds, but better to err applying too early than too late. But your call.

I'm putting Dimension down the first week of October and then again in January.

Current soil temp is 79° and will like warm slightly over the next couple of weeks.
For BR, the ten year average shows the first dip below 70° on 19 October.
You’ll be fine waiting until first week of October.

You gotta think long term with pre emerge
Results come from repeated applications fall and spring over a few seasons
It's worth it

When is the timing on the late winter pre-emergent? I always seem to miss that one.

When soil temperature warms to 55 F, which for south LA is usually the first two weeks of Feb - by Valentine’s Day.
