Anyone use a pool cooler? I was looking at the evaporative types. How are the water losses? Is there mist damage to nearby structures? Are these things legit?

My pool’s like a warm bath down in South LA

I've got a floating fountain I use on the booster pump line (only thing I use the booster pump for) and they sell cheap attachments that connect directly to the side wall. Yes, they work, and how well depends on the relative humidity. My small (9000 gallon) pool dropped 10 degrees running it over night. Usually it's more like 5 to 8 degrees.

I don't know how much water I lost because mine autofills. I don't care, because my pool is cooler and I can use it.

Agreed. I have a 14x32 gunite and just put 2 cheapo fountains that hook into return jets for $25 each. The pump runs about 6 hrs overnight and 6 during the day...it's made a huge difference. It is the same concept...evaporative cooling. I wouldn't spend $1500 on a chiller, when you can just spend $50 on some pvc sprays. They sell them at pool supply stores and Amazon. You have to make sure you but the eyeball seat remover tool, too.

It's incredible how well those things work...especially if you run them over night

I made my own out of 1” PVC and a hacksaw. Run my pumps from midnight to 8am. Will knock the heat right out.

This is the one I got. It's doesn't draw as much attention, in my opinion. You need at least 2.

my kids love these but I get tired of the white noise eventually and push them underwater when I'm outside for a long time.

so I got one of these in today and hooked it up. Are y'all serious? Theres no way this will make any difference in the pool temp. My 44 year old pee stream is stronger than this thing.

LOL. I did the same thing and it worked extremely well but my wife hated the aesthetic so we got the fountain which doesn't work as well but isn't an eye sore.

Is it on a booster pump? If so, do you have any restricting orifices? One problem I had was I had to actually add a RO to keep the pump from cavitating. It sounds like you just hooked it to a main pump supply port if your stream is that weak.

I made one out of 1 1/2" pvc that screws into my Polaris booster pump outlet. Made a "t" about 2" from the outlet and went about 30" in both directions and capped both ends. Drilled 1/8" holes about two inches apart at a slight angle towards the middle of the pool. Adjusted my valves on my lines so that it'll shoot water about 10 ft in the air that lands about 3/4 of the way across of the pool. Adjusted my pool timer to run mostly at night.

A couple of mild nights will drop your temps 5-7 degrees with no trouble.

Only downfall is if you have kids telling them to be careful around it and the inconvenience of having to switch it out when you need to run your Polaris.

Mine are vertical about 24” high. Came out of the wall of both my returns and 90 straight up 24” with an end cap. Made a 1” slit across the pipe about every inch on center. I scored the pipe at the 90 in case my kids hung on them they would break at the 90 and not in the wall.
I didn’t tighten them up all the way so you can turn them down so they are horizontal just under the water surface if I don’t want them spraying. I put them up every year around July 1 and take them down around Sept 1.

I have 5 return jets in my pool. I put plugs in 3 of them and these pvc cooler sprayers in the other two. I use my valves at my pump to decrease the returns to my bubblers and increase the spray out of the sprayers. Drops pool temps big time. The more contact the sprays get with the cooler air, the better.

I have a hard time getting the inserts out of the pool wall. I have been using a set of channel locks and I'm afraid I'm going to break the insert. I saw they make a tool that appears to slide into the insert which would allow you to turn it, but it's expensive for what appears to be a simple piece of metal. Is that the tool everyone uses to take these inserts in and out of their pool?

I bought a plastic one for $8 at the local pool supply store. It works perfectly. Better than damaging something with the wrong tool...that will cost more than $8
