Thinning trees is good. Your now height is good. With zoysia or Bermuda.....shorter the blade the thicker the roots. Are you in your second year of your zoysia lawn? In my experience all zoysia’s suffer a sophomore slump.
Yep 2nd year.

In my Experience Zoysia is way too thick for a manual reel mower, as in impossible to use. Thatch is also a major issue with zoysia you are going to want to bag it routinely most likely. When I had zoysia I literally couldn’t push my mower through it.
I agree with this. Last year before I bought a reel mower I was cutting it at about 2” and it would bog down my lawn tractor. Stuff gets super thick if you don’t mow low. The quality of cut between a reel mower and a regular mower is night and day.

Some of the best spots in my yard is getting about 4 hours. Right now full sun it’s burning the shite out of my grass. It’s been so dry. I find now that I have it low it’s easier to cut. I can’t deal with bagging on my reel mower. If there is any wind it blows out anyway. I’ll just dethatch once a year. I’ll figure how to post pictures and post a few if I get some time. I just cut my backyard down to the second to last notch on my reel which is probably close to 1/2” Just to see how it would come out. Looks pretty bad arse. I really need to roll my yard to smooth some spots.

Would love to see pics.
Now I'm debating tearing up front yard (which is a mess currently) and laying sod there as well.
There's just no way that I can rationalize buying a $1k+ mower for 1,800 sq ft.
Anyone try a quality push reel mower on this stuff yet?

You’ll get the same cut with a rotary with a lot less headache

Update at week 4 - Starting to green up in spots quite a bit. Seams are almost gone.
I've cut with a rotary 2 times now, and its been ok so far. I can definitely tell once it thickens up it aint gonna work too well.
When should I start thinking about fertilizer??

You can do organic fert now. Milorganite is very similar to the houactinite that I use.

I put nothing my first year. Manually pulled weeds, cut and watered.

Hydro seeded Zenith late last summer. It's finally starting to take shape. Been cutting with a rotary push, but cutting high for now to encourage growth and spreading. Once this stuff thickens up, I'd like to cut between 1 1/2" -2" tall. Does it really make a huge difference going to a reel? I was all about it, but riding a 42" rotary sounds a little nicer. lol.

Ok, I'm 6 weeks in and am really happy with the decision to go with Zoysia. It already looks established and rebounds well to any wear and tear.
I cut it twice with a regular rotary mower and wasn't happy with it as I was cutting low and scalping in a couple areas. So I went ahead and bought a manual/push real mower and cut it earlier this week. Definitely more work, but I've got the time right now.
Starting to get weeds in the small gaps of the creases that remain. Sprayed sledgehammer last week and now crabgrass is starting to pop up all over the place.
Any suggestions?

How did the sedgehamner go? My zoysia has a ton of nutsedge growing in it but I’m worried to put anything down until it’s fully established

Worked well, haven't seen any affect on the Zoysia.

I did sedgehammer and need to redo it if the rain stops. If you are spot spraying you should be good even with the new sod. I wouldn't do the whole yard though. Might get yellowing.

Need some help from the experts in here - starting to get ALOT of this growing in any area that had a small gap between the sod.
I manually pulled these things out of my yard for an hour over the weekend while the yard was soft.
I'm concerned that hitting it with Celcius will hurt the new sod that is beginning to get established. Should I just keep pulling all summer or can I use something to knock it out?

UPDATE:
Installed 1st week of April - Now 5 months in, and really happy with the decision.
HOC is 1-1.25 with the reel mower every 3-5 days. Weeds are pretty much choked out now, and hand pull what I find. Milorganite in Mid-Septemeber.

Looks good. Looks like you are taking a lot off the top with that reel mower. Is it kicking your arse.

That cut was a workout...was out of town and it was longer than I anticipated.
Typically only take the top 1/4-1/3 of the blade, but it looked good after that cut.

Looks good. I just killed a few patches of crabgrass in mine. Hoping the spots recover before winter. I think I'm done filling with river sand. It's not worth the trouble with the weeds.
