Opinion on $5,500 Quote to Replace Indoor Evap Coils (Update: Just Coils, not Air Handler)

These are the coils in the attic inside the duct. This is for a 5 ton unit. They called it a Level 17 if that helps.
There is no existing warranty that I can apply. We are not the original owners of the house. 6ish year old system.
Breakdown is approximately:
$4,615 - Parts and Labor to replace coils
$440 - Liquid Line Filter Drier with Coil/Compressor
$455 - Refrigerant (3-4 lbs)
$5,509 Total
A leak was found with the UV dye leak test. Could see where it was leaking with the UV light and could see bubbles forming at the leak with a soap solution.

Ouch. Seems really high (like almost double what I'd expect), but life in general is really expensive lately.

That’s pretty pricey. I. A coil replacing expert. I wanna say mine were around 3 to 3.5k

So they are just replacing the coils in the attic and not the entire air handler?

Get a quote for the air handler replacement (complete inside unit) from a couple of companies.
Edit: Get a couple of more quotes on just coil replacement too!

I'm replacing the air handler

quote:are you talking about the indoor unit (the air handler)? The AHU is just a sheet metal box with a fan motor blower and the evap coils. You may as well replace the entire thing it would certainly be faster

It’s my understanding that they are just replacing an assembly like this:
I’ll double check with them tomorrow if they planned on replacing the AHU too. No one mentioned that when they were here.
After dinner I’ll go in my attic and grab pictures of the unit itself.
Is everyone saying you would normally replace the entire box it is housed in too?

That seems awfully expensive. Might as well replace the AHU. Definitely get more quotes

It’s not likely they are quoting to replace the entire air handler unit, AHU (electric heat or heat pump) or furnace (gas heat) to which the cased evaporator coil is attached if it is only 6 years old. Level 17, they likely referring to the SEER rating of the system, 17 being a relatively high efficient unit.
Evaporator coils leaking at 5 to 6 years of age and requiring replacement have been problematic for some years now, regardless of manufacturer. Hopefully that is changing for the better with the all aluminum evaporator coils now being used.
I do agree with others the quote to replace the evap coil only seems on the high side with $2500-$3500 being the most common cost mentioned by others on this board that have have it done in the past couple years. As others have stated, the only way to be sure is to get a few more quotes from reputable HVAC companies.

That was me a few yrs ago. 2.5 ton in attic. (rarely used unit). just replaced whole AHU instead. got a better warranty than replacing just the coils. I think it was $1800-ish?
I can guarantee you're getting screwed over on the cost of the new coil. I know there's inflation but ca. 2018, a coil and TX valve for 4 ton Trane was about $1200. (bought by me)

14 years in the trade. That is extremely high for just an evaporator coil. Give Matty Ott a call he can replace that for much less. 5049133688

Thank you for the recommendation. Do you think he services the Mandeville area?

You are correct.
Spoke with them this morning.
This quote is just for replacing the coils only not the air handler unit.
Their exact words:
“Looking at the quote now. It is for the Coil itself. Aslo, it looks like it would have to come from the factory, with a 3-4 week lead time to get it .”
Edit to add: Getting more quotes this week. I’ll report back.

Last year I had a coil leak. 5 year old carrier unit. Parts were covered under warranty. Still cost me $1200 for labor and refrigerant.

I am not sure if he does or not, worth a text to him

$1000 coil
$20-30 filter/drier
$50 refrigerant
Puts you around $4400 labor and consumables.....
I would expect roughly half that in labor.
