Not a tree 'expert' either. LOL

I still have images in my mind of the devastation that Katrina caused. It looked like a war zone.

My Dad had lots of oaks and pines around his house(Ascension parish). Many trees were downed on his property. Thankfully none fell on his house.
My brothers and I cut up many of them and burned them.

Anywho. I would cut them down while they are still small.

Yes, I love oaks too but to me they are not worth the risk of having them too close to my house.

Something to keep in mind is will the roots cause damage to your homes foundation.

If you want some nice trees for your yard, check out LSUAGCENTER.com

Also check with your local tree nursery and see what they recommend.

water oaks are fine for the first 40 years, then it is the next guy's problem

my whole hood was water oaks and now we have zero shade besides the few people that plant live oaks a decade ago

I bought a place with about 20 mature water and willow oaks, and have now lost all but two of them. I miss the shade…the place looks nekkid without them

so I was the next guy.
I’ve planted a couple dozen replacements from acorns and they are pretty trees when young and grow really fast. So they’ll be the next guys problem LOL

Holy hell $5k? Is it because it was close to the house? I had a 60' water oak 25' from my house cut down last month for $1400 including the grinding

always figured water oaks were best in the woods. They seems to make a shite-load of acorns for the deer and wahtnot

Yes that was the biggest issue. My house is almost the whole width of my lot so there wasn’t a gate large enough to bring in any equipment into the back yard. So they had to remove a section of my fence to get a bobcat and other equipment back there and haul out some of the other stuff.

The other option from a couple other quotes I got involved them using a crane from my driveway and pulling the tree out over my house. I didn’t want to risk busting up my driveway worse than it is now and didn’t want them to accidentally drop a chunk of tree on my house.

Just all around a pain in the arse because of the location of the tree.

built my house next to a grand white oak in 98. huge and beautiful foliage. neighbor's house then went up, just as close to it as mine. after a few years they voiced concerns (hurricanes were passing through regularly) and they had an arborist come look at it. said it was fine. had it thinned and a fork cabled. Then last year, toward the end of the year it died as did others around me. had it taken down last week: it was hollow--you just never know. feel i jumped over several snakes without ever knowing it.
