I was at Lowe’s yesterday looking at faucets, and I decided to check out the toilets. They ranged from $89 to around $300. They all seemed to be 1.28 gpf. What makes a toilet better than another for there to be that kind of price difference?

For some people the toilet is an expression of style and taste. Personally, so long as it does what it’s supposed to do, that’s all the sh*ts I give.

Many of the cheaper toilets don't clean very well when they are flushed.

Go out the night before and abuse your gut at the all you can eat Mexican buffet and the next morning splatter the back of the bowl like you're blowing texture on a ceiling and you'll see the difference when flushed.

Make sure you have a toilet cleaning brush close at hand.

Toto toilets are injected under pressure which makes them heavier. I assume that makes them stronger. Also Toto and American standard have a really good flushing system on their higher end toilets. The Toto is called a double cyclone and the American standard is called Vormax. Both work very similar in that it takes less water to create the siphon to remove solids. The water that is saved is then used to wash down the bowl. I have the American standard version in my kids bathroom and rarely have to clean the bowl because the toilet is so good at cleaning it on its own.

Ditto to that man, years ago got tired of plunging the kids' toilet. Bought a toto and have never done it since.

Lowe’s stocks one American Standard in a 1.6gpf model. That’d be my preference vs style. The additional water also helps evacuate the sewer line. The low flows have improved at emptying the bowl but no substitute for flow down the drain line

The old saying is you're gonna spend 1/3 of your life on the toilet. Not a place to go cheap.

same here but mine never could clog a Vormax. Owned a 1.28 and a 1.6gpf model. I couldn't tell much difference between the two.

We did a home renovation ~7 years ago. Converted a den into a master bath. We bought a fancy looking toilet that was supposed to have all the bells and whistles. It developed a leak at the tank to bowl connection last year. Replaced rubber washers, ended up spraying some flex seal over the bolts in the tank. Still had something leaking. Bought a cheap replacement and it works great. Occasionally have to clean up remnants in the bowl, but not often. We clean the bathrooms a couple times a month, and it stays mostly clean between those. Did the same in my daughter's bathroom a couple years ago. It was having trouble flushing, and it looked original to the house. A little round bowl, low seat height toilet for a kids bathroom. I upgraded to oval and chair height, and maybe spent $100 on it and installed it one night. Works great. Don't overthink it if you just need something to function. Mine is tucked away in a room and the looks of a toilet aren't very important to me. I want it to flush and not clog, and an old flapper design works almost 100% of the time, if no one throws feminine products or baby wipes in there. After getting my sewer line rooted in the spring, told the wife and daughter that they're paying for the next one, as the plumber found baby wipes in the cleanout while he was rooting it.

All I know is we have Vortens toilets throughout the house and they fricking suck. Every one of them has this thing that if you don’t forcefully flush and pull the handle back up, they won’t refill the tank. They also don’t clean well at all.

Have been impressed. Contractor installed them in two bathrooms then I changed the other two bathrooms to match.
