I live in a house build in the 50s. The facade is brick, but the eaves, soffit, fascia, and under the carport are all aluminum siding.

The paint is chipping on the siding and it looks like shite.

I figure my options are:

-Repaint the siding, knowing that I'd have to get it repainted again eventually

-New siding. Which would likely be vinyl. Not sure how I feel about that. When Acadian Windows was quoting me for new windows a few years ago, their salesman said it would likely be around $9,000 to get new siding through them. This wasn't a hard quote though.

-RhinoShield. They have a warranty as long as I live in the home. I personally don't know anyone who has had RhinoShield done to their home.

I have not reached out for quotes yet, but I wanted to see if anyone here had an opinion which route to go, and who to get quotes from. Or if they've had any experieicne with RhinoShield.

No brainer.

Paint the aluminum.

You think?

My concern is paying all this money for something that will have to be done again in a short amount of time (relative to just replacing the siding)

If you prep properly and use a top quality exterior paint on the aluminum, you won't have a problem. If you cheap out or cut corners, you will.

Aluminum is almost permanent. Siding will fade and crack.

Paint and repaint as needed. Probably cheaper than siding.

Just my opinion.

BTW how long has that aluminum been installed?

It was on the house when I bought it 20 years ago. I assume its been on there for much longer than that.

My neighbor had a house with redwood siding. They got sold on RhinoShield and the life-time warranty. The coating caused the redwood to rot. They had to re-side the entire structure.

They sued and the local RhinoShield went bankrupt. They reopened under a different name after.

Paint is not that expensive and may last 8-10 years. Your aluminium sounds like it'll last forever.

paint the aluminum
if there’s nothing wrong with it why would you replace it?

If you have lived there 20 then I’m assuming you have roots down? The avg person won’t live in the house long enough to be repainted again.

That old aluminum is probably made to last. I wouldn’t replace aluminum with Vinyl personally. But it’s your house

Just had my aluminum trim, windowsills and the siding (or whatever it is) repainted. Bricks pressure washed. Looks great. First time I’ve had it done, although it needed to be done about 2 years ago. So, not bad - one paint job in 25 years. It will last if done properly. I trust my person. A real contractor who mostly remodels, but does “little stuff” when his schedule allows. Did fence work and double slider door replacement for me, too. Paint it.

My father built a home in pass christian in 2007, when it needed to be repainted in like 2012 or so he chose Rhino Shield. That coating faded badly and and chipped, The warranty only covered the paint, not labor, and it has since been re-coated in Rhino Shield like 4 years ago. It is already faded again.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT USE RHINO SHIELD.

My house has aluminum siding and just repainted it last week. Last time I did it was 20 years ago. Looks like the cedar siding on most of my neighbors homes. If done right it will hold up and easy to clean periodically. Looks brand new.

You painted it yourself, or hired someone?

Same thing happened to my parents. They had rhino shield do their house like 15 years ago and my dad still says it was the worst money he ever spent.
