Where would you guys recommend putting the microwave in this layout? I would like it in the pantry (door left of dishwasher) but I don't think there's room for shelves wide enough.

Hate to take away from cabinetry and put it at the top. I am leaning island or lower left of the stove (blocked a bit by island).

Can it go inside the island?

Yeah, cabinets haven't been started yet. House just got framed but electricians asking where to put it.

What is on the other side of the refrigerator? I would look at what items in the cabinets could I put somewhere else to use a microwave shelf in an upper cabinet location. If you are considering putting the microwave in the island then can something in the upper cabinets go into the island?

I like the look of the microwave in the island but my hesitation on doing that is the functionality of a microwave there. For me, constantly having to bend over to see the right buttons to push would be annoying.

This is what we did, but the only annoyance we have is we constantly have to lock it because the little ones love to press the buttons.

If done again, I'd probably still do the island.

Also, make sure your electrician runs the lines properly. Mine told me the microwave needs to be on a dedicated breaker, then proceeded to wire it incorrectly and has it share with some outlets

Assuming you have power ran to the island (which is per code now) I would put it in the island out of view

Mine is beneath the island countertop. It's nice bc it preserves countertop space, but if you're lazy and don't like to bend, you may hate cleaning it.

we did this on our remodel. i haven't moved in to know whether or not i like it, but here's a pic if that helps.

i "think" we'll like it there. most things i'm microwaving will be coming from the fridge or pantry so it seems like a good spot.

My first choice would be in the pantry. If it won’t fit I’d put it in the island.

I can’t see putting something used regularly down low in an island especially if you plan on living in this house forever. That will get old quick.

microwaves and trashcans in islands are two incredibly dumb things i wish would go away in new home designs.

I assume there is a single oven under your stove? If so you will regret having only one oven.

What you need to do is move your stove/range over to the right a few feet. Then have your cabinet maker build you a built in oven with a built in microwave above it right next to your refrigerator. This is the same setup I had when I built my last house.

My house was built in 2012. Microwave in the island. Loved it. My 5 year old could easily work it to warm up nuggets and such. But then the microwave went out. Now we have one on our countertop. On my project list is to remove the old one and turn it into open shelving.

I’ll add TVs over the fireplace in the living area to this list. Can’t stand that look.

This is how we had ours in the last house and I loved it! 100% will put it there again at our next house. Made it super easy to clean because I could easily see and reach everything. I'm on the short side (5'-4") so our current setup above the stove is just not a great height for me - I can't even see in to my bowl of soup or mug of whatever to see if it's bubbling or not.

I’ll be guilty of this one once we move back in. It’s the centerpiece of the room so I don’t have much choice.

This almost exactly the same layout as our kitchen. Our microwave is in the island

Almost every house plan we looked at had it. We moved the fireplace to a different wall when we finally picked a plan.

This is my favorite thing about our kitchen. Where would you rather it be?
