We are soon moving into a new house that will need a new in wall oven (single), microwave (on shelf above oven for a built-in look), 36” gas cooktop, dishwasher, and refrigerator. Additionally, there are spaces that have been used for a compactor and an ice maker.

Biggest question- is any one brand at the top in terms of reliability for all the major appliances? Or will we do better to mix and match brands in the same color and style?

Secondary question- we aren’t planning to replace the compactor with another one. We would place a wine fridge in that space. But, the compactor and ice maker are right next to each other. Does anyone have an ice maker that doesn’t cause them problems? I’ve never seen one that doesn’t seem to have problems. Would it really be better to replace both of those with a larger wine refrigerator?

Have had 0 problems with my Uline ice maker and wouldn’t give it up for anything, especially just a bigger wine fridge.

I think every brand has their specialty like Bosch is great for dishwashers but another brand is better for refrigerators. If you want best reliability you will probably have to mix and match.

My best advice is buy everything local from a place that only services what they sell.

I didn't want to bother with mixing and matching to hopefully get it right so I just went with middle of the road appliances from LG. Was able to get a manufacturers rebate as well as a NECO rebate. After rebates I got washer, dryer, smart french door fridge, gas slide in range, dishwasher, microwave, and stainless hood all for 4500. All stainless all matching. Hell for those prices if I have to replace in 3-5 years I'm ok with it.

I haven't had any issues in 5 years with all higher-midgrade appliances from GE. That includes microwave, dishwasher, stove/oven, fridge.

Our house had GE Profile appliances that I've mostly been satisfied with (gas cooktop, double oven in wall, dishwasher, above range microwave/oven). Only thing I don't care for is the microwave above the gas cooktop since the handle has a plastic coating that has bubbled and cracked due to heat from the cooktop. I brought a Kenmore Elite refrigerator from our old house which I also love.

Bosch Dishwasher, Kitchen Aid Fridge/Oven/Micro.

Definitely get an ice maker. Have had one in my last 2 houses and will never build another house without one.

If you go out of town for more than a day or 2, turn it off and drain it if you are worried about it leaking.

What model ice maker do you have and where do you put it?

I have a Hoshizaki C-80BAJ under the counter in a little coffee nook in my kitchen. This pic is from construction:

Tell me about that refrigerator. Do you like the layout? Is the freezer drawer a pain in the arse? What brand is it?

I'm old and I have to say I hate bending over to get shite out of the bottom freezer drawer with the heat of 1000 suns. Also about once a month my kids set something on top of it that falls into the alcove behind it as I'm opening the drawer preventing you from closing it so down on my knees I go to stick my arm in there at odd angles trying desperately to get my fingers around the edge of whatever it is to shove it out under the fridge or lift it out.

Bonus when it's an opened box of popsicles that pour out when I grab the wrong end.

Also everything ends up piled in the freezer basket no matter how much you attempt to organize and you have to dig through shite and put it all out on the counter.

frick a bottom drawer. Next fridge I buy is side by side or bust.

I have fantasies at night of opening a side door freezer and everything is eye level and organized onto individual shelves.

I hate how unorganized bottom drawer freezer gets, but it holds so much more than the old side by sides. The narrow space of side by side really limits what you can put in there. Ultimate fridge to me would be one of the higher end sub zero or similar where freezer side is same size as fridge side.

It is a Kitchen Aid KRMF706ESS. It is my first bottom freezer unit, and I love it. Yes the bottom freezer gets unorganized, but it has a lower basket and 2 shelves to help separate everything.

The fridge has so much room its almost comical. It is the most efficient use of space I've ever seen in a refrigerator. The 2 smaller drawers allow you to store certain items without having to open the entire fridge. We use one side for meats and the other for produce, but I have seen people use one drawer for cold drinks also. The inside shelves are configurable as well, so there are many combinations to use based on what suits you. Its also super quiet. We have the ice maker turns off so that helps, but we never hear the compressor kick on.

I would buy it again 100 times over.

The Adora GE line at home depot is a great value imo. It's basically 90% of the features on higher end GE products at the profile price point. We have the fridge and love it so far. The autofill feature (automatically fills cup, pitchet, etc. with water) is awesome.

That’s what I fear. But our current refrigerator is a side by side and I hate it. Both sides are too narrow at times. I wouldn’t mind one of the French door models with 4 doors. But most of those I’ve seen have been eithe Samsung or LG and I don’t want to take my chances there.

We have an older fridge in the garage with the freezer at the top and all the big items and overflow goes there so the freezer drawer didn't make sense for us but happy wife etc etc.

Side by side or the big one door fridge will be our next purchase but that's because we do have place for bigger stuff.

We have the same exact KitchenAid refrigerator that you have. Have you had any issues with your ice maker? I have had service calls on mine dealing with ice maker at least 4 or 5 times. Horrific piece of shite (ice maker).

I also have a Hoshizaki (Sonic ice) outside for my outdoor kitchen. One of the best purchases we have made.

If you are talking about the refrigerator ice maker- we have it turned off. We use ice from the Hoshi beside the fridge.

As far as the Hoshi we have had zero problems in 2 years. I drain it about once every 3 months and clean the bin. About once a year I run some CLR through the auger to clear out any scale buildup. If we go out of town for more than a few days I turn it off and prop the door open just in case it decides to break while we are gone for a week.
