I have a 500sft shed behind the house i use as an office some days. It's insulated and was once air conditioned but the old system is shot. Would you pay to have a pro install a new system (probably $7k+) or would you throw in a Mr Cool mini-split? My family does not hang out there, we do not invite guests out there, it's not a fancy thing. I don't need 72deg in August in the deep south, just 78-80 few days a week during working hours.

My cheap arse would put a 10K BTU window unit for $300 and never look back.

I agree, an inverter window unit is efficient and quiet.

This, and if you get the "U" style, you cut down on thermal losses from the cheesy side gaskets

I’ll just back up what everyone else said, few weeks back I was facing the same decision and went and got a midea 12K inverter for $350 bucks as a stopgap. It is now the permanent solution.

I have had a Mrcool for about 5 years in my patio. No complaints. Window unit easier and cheaper but probably 10x as loud.

I have 500 sqft in my garage and installed a 18,000 Mini split in my garage this spring. I work in there about 3 days a week. It keeps in very nice in there and probably cost me $$50-75 a month electricity right now. I am extremely happy with it. I did not go with the MR Cool. I have the Daikin

For a 500 sq ft shed used a few days a week, a professional install for $7k+ is a massive waste of money. Just DIY a 12k BTU Mr. Cool. It comes pre-charged, so you don't need a hvac tech or special gauges to hook up the lines.

Is your patio screened or fully enclosed? I am considering a similar setup for my outdoor area and searching for some real world performance data.

What about one of those little portable r2d2-looking units, the Mrs (no pics) might not like having a window unit hanging out. Are those decent? My dad has one at the camp and it seems to work well.

Will you have a dedicated 15A breaker for the AC? I just purchased a portable 12K BTU from Lowe's and it draws 11.7A. If you have saws and whatnot on the same circuit, the amp draw might be an issue for you. But the unit puts out a lot of cold air...

Costway brand comes precharged I am not sure if they are as DIY as Mr Cool because I haven't looked that much into them but it says precharged and cheaper than the Mr cool line.
