It can be mixed both times of day. In the Gary YouTube video he gave a more accurate percentage, but I can’t recall it.

Which is why they can be self fertile and pollinate themselves !

I just did a bud graft of from SH (a) onto the rootstock I have that also has the winter Mexican (b) grafted. We will see what happens with it! If it works I’ll
Have an A and B on same tree.

I recently discovered bud grafting, it’s actually very easy, and is the way the big fruit nurseries actually graft in the field (Dave Wilson). Used a T shape cut, but only works when the bark is slipping (sap flowing)

I think I picked Wurtz bc some nurseries argue they are AB and can self polinate. But I looked all over this tree and couldn't find a single female flower this morning. And supposedly Wurtz is more A than B and A types are female in the morning. So I'm wondering what exactly they sent me.

Loving the avocado knowledge being dropped in here.

Harvested the first jaboticaba of the season. Excellent flavor, no bitterness even in the skin. Many more on the way.

did you say earlier that your pawpaws had leafed out? The seedlings I planted haven’t done anything yet. It’s been dry as shite so I gave them a little water, bark is still green so I don’t think they’re dead LOL

My pawpaws haven’t leafed out yet either and still scratch green.

I also have a navel orange and a Meyer lemon that haven’t done anything yet. They had been struggling in the ground so I put them in pots this fall to make it easier to protect. They dropped most of their leaves, but still no signs of life yet.

All but one of mine are flushing leaves. The one that isn't (my largest) has blooms that are getting ready to pop. They can take forever. If it scratches green it's fine.

Lol, boy have I been through that. Hear me when I say this: just wait. Wait and wait and wait. Probably wait until late summer. Citrus, despite having extremely resilient roots, love to act like they are dying after container to ground or ground to container transplants. I have had them drop every single leaf and stress bloom before turning into green twigs. Then, months later, they shoot out new leaves like nothing ever happened. In fact, they almost always recover the very second that I give up and spend money on a replacement. That's why I have two meiwa kumquats and two cara cara oranges. Don't believe their bullshite. It's fake news.

Also maybe it's just me but I've noticed that navel oranges, especially cara cara, tend to take longer to establish themselves than any other citrus. I have grown 3 of them and each one spent the first year barely growing at all and not even greening up despite applications of chelated iron, etc. Then, in year two, it does normal citrus things and gets its deep green leaves. Every other citrus I've ever planted at least showed signs that it was anything other than stagnate in year 1.

I find Meyer to be the opposite. Extremely vigorous grower.

PSA: guavas are back at Costco. If you've never had a guava and want to get an idea of what they are before growing them, this is a good chance. These are very inferior guavas but the most important thing about them is the smell. If you like the smell of these, you will like guava in general. If you hate the smell it probably isn't for you. I would not take anything whatsoever from the taste/flavor of these Costco guavas. This is nothing close to a good cultivar like ruby supreme. Only the aroma is equal. Buy the most yellow ones you can find, not the green ones. Those will be the sweetest. Put them in a paper bag at room temp and wait until they get soft and yellow.

This one was pretty good but again I picked the ripest box on the pallet.

PSA: Melissa Pierce on FB just got in new inventory. She ships 7g trees.

I am always looking at dwarf mangos that will handle container growing. Of interest here are the 7g Honey Kiss, Nam Doc Mai #4, and Pickering. 3g ice cream and Julie are also dwarf but more challenging to grow.

Yeah. Just paint it. Two coats is best if it's gonna be 2+ years. It lasts a LONG time. Let it dry completely for at least 24 hours before potting.

I have moved the new lipstick palm from the house out on my lanai. Not in direct sun at all. Just indirect. Doing OK. We have been fairly dry here the past few weeks so I have been giving it some water every few days. I also filled a spray bottle with water and have been spraying it down every so often when I walk by. It has not changed a lot. But its not quite as pretty as it was when I took it out of the box.

I am about to start transitioning my Flame thrower out of the shade and into the sun a little each day. It is inside my pool cage so I assume the netting is filtering the light a little. I know that we never get sun burned inside the cage.
The flame thrower is doing great so far but I need that spot it is in for another plant. I seem to be getting a lot of plants lately that do not like the sun.
I plan on repotting the flame thrower soon. It is in a 7g and I may do what you recommended and move it to a 15 right away. I do however think who ever potted it did it correctly. It is very heavy and there seems to be a lot of sand in the container.

I also bought a small alocisia (elephant ear) and have it under the shad. Always wanted one of those but my buddy said they do not like to live and have a death wish. LOL. Said he kills every one of them he buys so I am testing my skills with it. So far so good except there is a very faint yellow line on the outside of the leaves so I may be overwatering it. I backed off a little to see if it will go away.

Will add some pics when the sun comes up.

Yep. Just gotta ride it out with the lipstick until it settles in. May be a while. Mine is SLOWLY starting to come around after 3 months. I need to get it outside but we just had a cool front. Will clip the yellowing fronds soon. Palms use the yellowing fronds. You should leave them as long as you can stand to look at them.

Flamethrower is a significantly easier palm, I agree. Remember that palms do uncommonly well in small pots. 15g would be very close to a final container size for any palm I was growing.

I just bought a single stem Kentia palm to put in my kitchen. I'm developing a disturbing taste for the most expensive palms on the market. I even paid more for the single stem than it cost to get multiple Kentias in one pot because I didn't want to take the risk of dividing them.

Next month I'm picking up a few Chamaedorea radicalis. They are the best looking cold hardy palm I've ever seen except for a mule palm. But these tolerate deep shade. Hardy to zone 8.

Alocasia are easy. Don't give it full sun or it will burn. Mostly shade and it will grow huge. I like Borneo King and Borneo Giant. Have several of these.

I bought some of the injected 10gal and 15 gal pots you recommended off Amazon. Would you suggest moving it to the 10 gallon first? I will send a picture of it later. I can do either or I can leave it alone for a while. Let me know what you think when I send the pics. I have a new spike that is about 2 feet long now. Wasnt even there when I got it 6 weeks ago. The entire tree is very dark green too and the leaves are looking pretty good if you ask me. Im happy that Ive done so well with it so far. LOL.

Cant wait to see if the first new frond is red.

Yea, I have the small elephant ear under the shade. It seems to be doing well and has popped out a few new leaves since I had it. I have just always loved them. I want a big one but I also wanted to see if I could grow one so I bought a small one from Lowes. I tell you that our Lowes garden center is the shite. The plants there always look amazing and they will refund them for a year. Its hard to beat that deal when they do such a good job on the plants.

I was in there two nights ago and they had some beautiful mango trees for sale. All your damn talk about them had me wanting to get one. I just dont think any fruit tree is going to be easy for me inside my pool cage

A few pics. For reference, I am 6-1 and that tallest frond on my flame thrower is exactly the same height as the top of my head. Should I leave it in the 7gal a while or move it to a 10 or 15? I have always been a little confused when I should repot.

Big ears

Lipstick

Lipstick is a 3 gal. Ive been watering it every couple days and spraying it daily with a spray bottle.

Need pics of whole palm, trunk, and the 10/15g next to the existing pot for scale.

Pollination would likely be a problem but there are fruit trees that will appreciate container growing and less than full sun like jaboticaba and Suriname cherry.
