We had hoped to do this project this year, but can't seem to find a contractor that will actually follow up with an estimate. We've had 2 come out, and both have ghosted us. Is this common? The second one did respond to my text over the weekend saying he's been super busy. He came out at the end of April to get measurements and design plans. The first guy came out in February and we haven't heard from him since. Both came highly recommended.

My hope was to get 2 or 3 estimates before deciding, but feels like I'll need to just use the first one that can follow through on an estimate. Guessing the new construction business has them tied up and these smaller jobs just isn't worth their time.

I'm starting to find it common for small commercial projects.

It's frickin nuts. They must be busy as hell. I ran into lots of the same issues trying to get contractors to quote my job, so I did everything I could myself and subbed a few things out. I would love to explore getting into the business.

for a small job like a bathroom remodel it takes a lot of time for very small profit compared to the same amount of time on larger projects. most guys wont even do bathroom remodels unless its part of a larger home remodel, its just a numbers game where you get the best profit for investing your time.

come winter time when things are very slow and they are looking for work, thats when they are willing to do small jobs with small profit margins just to keep busy.

OP you will find them much more interested in the winter time, right now most dont even have time for small jobs no matter the price tag

Where are you located? Most contractors here in North Florida/Lower Alabama and probably farther out have more business than they can handle thanks to Hurricane Michael. We have a full house renovation underway and have a hell of a time getting work done. We are doing everything we can ourselves and waiting (waiting, waiting) for subpar subs to show up.

So yeah, your experience is fairly typical right now. :(

Kinda figured that which is why we started the process back in January.

Oh well. Was hoping to have it done by fall, but that's looking iffy now.

We renovated our whole house. Had a contractor but subbed out a bunch of small things he didn’t want to do.

We did a lot of calling and scheduling...

If they don’t call you back in a timely manner don’t use them.

We did our entire house but there are people out there hiring to build houses. You have a bathroom and a kitchen-that’s even lower on the paycheck scale.

Pick out your materials and have them ready when you find your guy.

SIL is a contractor. He is way booked up for almost a year out. It's got to the point that he only works 4 1/2 days a week, but most days are 12 hour days for him. He was offered double his fees and had turn that down.

Yep, a buddy came to hook up a new ac system for me and I asked how much I owe him. He flat out told me I couldn't afford him.

And I get calls from people all the time wanting me to do small jobs. Ain't going to happen there.

Contacted 2 other contractors last week and both sounded interested in the job. Both were no shows Friday to look at the rooms so they could prepare an estimate. One did call Friday night and apologized and said he had a crisis on one of his jobs that took him all day to deal with, but then said it'd be 2 or 3 weeks before he could get out to look at ours.

We have the plans from a designer on how we want the rooms to look. We have the tile we want picked out. We have the countertops and back splash we want picked out. We have a cabinet guy already lined up to re-face the kitchen cabinets and build new bathroom cabinets. We have the cash sitting in our bank account ready to pay someone. So crazy, but after all the responses I see it is not uncommon.

Are you talking about changing cabinets and paint or are you talking busting out walls moving plumbing, etc?

Kitchen is a pretty simple job. New cabinet doors, new countertops, new back splash, painting the walls, and new sink. No major changes to it.

Master bath is a little more extensive. Expanding the shower, moving the two sinks, replacing the tile floors, repairing any water damaged sub-flooring and walls, new light fixtures, etc. One plan we have for it is completely changing the layout - moving the shower, moving the tub, doing away with a frosted glass window, etc. We're expecting that estimate to be above our budget though, but asking for one anyway.
