Have a kawasaki engine on my cub cadet tank sz 60. It keeps losing rpms and killing. Backfires a bit too. I've changed everything I can. Spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, fuel pump, drained the tank, use ethanol free gas. Took it to the place in Watson that's the only cub cadet authorized service dealer around but they couldn't fix it. It cuts great and I hate to get rid of it but I'm more than frustrated at this point. 9 years old and only started giving me problems last year. Recommendations?

this sounds like a fuel related issue

95% of all lawnmower issues are because the carburetor needs to be cleaned or replaced

Does it only happen with the PTO is engaged?

If it started happening after changing a fuel filter, make sure flow is correct.

Thanks. The carb is the only thing I haven't touched. When I took it to watson they drained the tanks and replaced the fuel so I don't think that's it. And it happens anytime, not just when the pto is engaged

I might be able to help you out. I work on small engines.

Start with the carb. Get yourself a can of carb cleaner and with the mower running gently spray where the throttle shaft goes into the carb. If the rpms level out when you are sparying it then the carb body is worn out and needs to be replaced. You can even do the same at the choke shaft and where the carb mates up to the motor to see if the gasket is leaking.

There are a few other things you could check but I would start there and you don't really have to pull anything apart for that

Diagnosis: carburetor removal denial syndrome

Treatment: 6 pack of beer followed by carburetor removal and cleaning.

Definitely a fuel problem. 1st i'd pull the fuel line off the carb and be sure fuel is flowing freely out of that fuel line. If not, fuel line is bad or tank is not venting properly. If this is not the issue, I would pull the carb and clean thoroughly. I boil all my carbs in lemon juice when they need cleaning. Works every time.

Sounds like you might need to look at the carb and fuel filter.

I would not replace the whole mower for this. You could fix and rebuild a carb. There are YouTube videos on it - probably for the exact engine too. Kawasaki is a great small engine.

The newer EFI Kawasaki’s are another story. Don’t know much about those. Would actually prefer to have a carb than that long term.
