What manual reel are you using?
16" 7 blade Earthwise.
Though it may not be feasible with thick bermuda, it goes down to 0.5"

My Fiskars is almost killing me going through year 2 TifTuf at the lowest setting (1”) and that’s cutting every three days.

Are you using a 5 blade? That could be the difference.

Do you use PGR?

Yup it’s 18” 5 blade that could be it. I assumed it had more blades since it’s one of the more pricy ones. I might go pick up an earthwise on marketplace or slap a little 24vdc motor on mine.
It starts leaving these little waves when I bog it down too hard.
No pgr, at least not yet. My bare spots aren’t yet filled in, just started growing good recently. I’ve never used PGR, just got into my lawn more intensely because I lost a tree and now I have sun.

Yep. The ol' washboard effect.
Do you double cut going the opposite way? That's supposed to eliminate the waves.

Get rid of the 5 blade. I had a 5 blade earthwise and I really enjoyed it but then my grass got thick. I was about to give up reel mowing but then I bought the 7 blade. Night and day difference.

I got the 7 blade earthwise for my empire zoysia ..mowing at 0.5”. It’s nice!
Just upgraded the rear roller to this Ashland conveyor belt roller, perfect drop in about 5lbs added weight ..helps with it bouncing. Roller

This thread has had me plotting. I'm super tempted to rent a sod cutter and move all the st aug from my front yard to the shady spots in the back then replace it with tiftuf. Would only need 3 or 4 pallets.

What a great idea! Let us know how it goes.
Your TifTuf shouldn't come overseeded at this point in the season

You can tell that what's left of the rye appears to be dying off. Hopefully the bermuda will get super thick soon.

That looks ready to take off. Id go lower, feed, and just beat out the scalped areas with a rake. It’ll heal fast enough.
Mine was weird this year because we were in the high 80s for two weeks then back to 60s or low 70s for a month and now we get hot and dry all at once. Super thick now but hasn’t filled some holes yet and has brown Poa here and there.
The best thing about having TifTuf is being able to abuse it.
Oh also forgot you’re on PGR already don’t know how that affects abuse.

I’ve sprayed AMS the last three Saturdays and used just .15 oz of PGR.
It’s growing now.
Will probably rake up dead material today, or at least the most problematic spots.

Two small doses of MSM didn't affect the young turf in the slightest.
I've thrown everything you can throw at it in less than two months.
It's a champ

The rye sure was pretty, but I'm glad it's gone. The difference is obvious now.

No streaks!

Very nice. You make me want to switch my front yard from centipede to Bermuda.

I see you have centipede (maybe St. Aug) across your walkway. How does that look in person with the grass types being different? Asking because every house on my street is centipede.

Yes, mostly Centipede. I've learned that most people are 110% oblivious to grass.
To me, it looks like night and day, but I'm sure that most are totally unaware...even in morning dew conditions

This picture will answer your question better than my words can:

Long term I plan on trimming the pine and putting at least a few feet of bermuda there.

Do it!

It doesn’t look bad actually. One neighbor only has a few from my property line to his driveway, so I’d just rip his centipede up and install Bermuda.

The other neighbor is the problem. I have about 20 feet from my driveway to the property line where he’d have his whole front yard being centipede. That would be a drastic transition.

Wait, I though you said it was against the HOA to have anything but Centipede..?

I've been spraying 10 oz of 20-0-0 every weekend. I like the results so far, but I'm worried it's not enough long term.

If I were to bump that up to 12 oz / 15. lbs of N would that be too much at once? I'm spraying it, not spreading granular.

At the same time, is that not enough total nitrogen? .6 lbs of total N per month is nothing for bermuda. Do I need to be applying a slow release granular as well?

You can do .25lbs of AMS per week for a total of 4 per month. I don't typically use two different types of ferts at the same time so I wouldn't do ammonium and urea during the same week. You could urea on week 1 and then AMS on week 2,3, and 4.

What I did last year in my front yard was a half rate of 33-3-6 every other week and a full rate of iron on off weeks. Yard looked great.

Thanks, as always. Would you spray that much though? Possible burn?

Yeah, kinda. HOA rules say you have to sod centipede in your front yard. When I built, I just followed the rules but they don’t care. People have switched when their centipede died.

I wouldn't spray it much longer. As temps heat up there is a possibility for tip burn. -
