Just had new Zoysia sod put down. Full of weeds and not sure how to handle.

Had front and backyard resodded last week.
Following all the watering guidelines etc but I’ve noticed a TON of what appears to be broomsedge and a little bit of Virginia buttonweed.
Not sure if I should be active hand picking this stuff out or to just let the sod establish. I don’t want the weeds to steal nutrients etc from the grass.
I knew going in that the sod wasn’t going to be 100% weed free, but it’s been annoying to go out and see what seems like every single square having a lot of sedge.
What’s weird is that although the sod all came from the same place and was delivered and installed at the same time, the front yard doesn’t appear to have hardly any weeds in it, whereas the backyard is full of them.
Any advice?

It was probably in your soil......how was the dirt prepped?

I don’t think it was it was in my soil to start. Didn’t have these weeds in my previous lawn and when I lift up the sod pieces the weeds aren’t rooted into the dirt below.
As far as soil prep prior to laying the sod, I’m not sure what the landscaping company did, if anything. I can ask.

If you still have mainly Zoysia, I would expect it to kick the weed's arse soon enough. I have yet to see a Zoysia lawn with a ton of weeds

Where did you get the sod from? I put down 29 pallets last year and haven’t had a single weed yet.

I’ll ask on monday where it came from. Had the whole yard, drainage, garden beds done at once through a local landscaper with good recs.

Don't overreact and start trying to kill the weeds. Let the zoysia get rooted and it will choke out a lot of the weeds.

That’s probably what I need to do. I get out there and see them and just start going to town pulling weeds but I know that’s probably doing more harm than good.

Leave it alone for a few weeks. You put any starter fertilizer out? If not, I would

If you have VBW in newly sodded zoysia, id be talking to the landscape contractor who did the work. If it was truly in the sod, id be requesting some sort of fix. Either treatment in the future or some sort of return in compensation.
But…. I have a hard time seeing a sod farm selling sod with VBW. It just seems more likely it was already in your yard.

I'll post a pic shortly.
Definitely not in my yard. There appeared to be a dead stalk or two on day one after install (like it had been treated with herbicide). Since then I've found a few more strands but not many. Like 3 or 4.
The (what I think is) broomsedge is much more prevalent and I'd say just about every 16x24 piece has several instances ranging from fried/dead/dormant all the way to actively growing and green. Most are small but a not insignificant amount are 3-4+ inches in diameter.
Also just to clarify, this sod was put down one week ago today, so it's not like we're 4 months in and my old weeds are sprouting through. The weeds I'm seeing do seem to be getting bigger/more prevalent, but they were absolutely there on day 1 and day 2 following install.
It sounds like the general consensus is to just leave it alone and tackle the weeds once the sod is fully established (which I guess would be in like september/October time?)

Step 1) water the crap out of it until it’s established
Step 2) fertilize as directed with 15-0-15 or 24-0-12 to start to thicken it
Step 3) come fall spot treat and the combination of healthy zoysia and some spot spray indicated for the weeds you have will knock it all out by next season
I really wouldn’t even sweat it with zoysia outside of torpedo grass, just don’t jump the gun before it’s established.

I would get the contractor back out to inspect. If he uses the supplier a lot, you may have some recourse. I know over time, a healthy Zoysia lawn will keep most weeds out, but to hell with letting them get a foothold early.
