Johnson grass in a pasture of Bahia

Any suggestions on getting rid of the johnson grass without hurting bahia?

Man, I hate Johnson grass. That crap can easily cut you up with tiny razor type cuts if you brush against the foliage the wrong way.

I have major problems with Johnson grass in my area and have never had a problem with it in the actual pasture. I guess I just keep it mowed frequently enough to prevent it.

Would love to keep it cut but the cows have to eat too
Looking for an herbicide that will kill the johnson grass without affecting the bahia. Could always spot treat but it will come back in other areas

Yes that is what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Maybe select herbicide or fusillade? We used to spot spray rhizome Johnson grass with select and crop oil in cotton and soybeans. It would top kill it. Rhizome Johnson grass is tough to get rid of or used to be. It would kill seedling jg though.
Reason I suggest these is I do not see Bahia on the label of either, but

I would try roundup or other herbicide of your choice in a wick bar. Its what we used to do before roundup ready soybeans.

Are you dealing with a lot of johnson grass? If it is a big pasture I'd just use glyphosate or weedeat it to the ground.

I pulled up some of it by the root in a field of mine y-day. There is more that needs to be pulled up but it typically comes up by the roots, the ground here is damp, FYI.

Man, you must be as old as me! Haven’t thought about one of those rigs in years!

Spent my Summers walking fields with a paint roller mounted on a piece of PVC and a jug of roundup, wiping the Johnson grass. Also built the wick bars.

Yep I'm old. We mounted a wick bar on the front of our JD 600-A Hi-Boy and I covered many an acre. That was the most uncomfortable machine to drive we had. They still sell wick bars I looked this morning.

I remember the first generation of that. We mounted 1” X 4” lumber on the hi-boy. We tacked a bunch of kitchen sponges to it and soaked the sponges with a garden sprayer filled with roundup on the turnrows! Eventually, roundup came up with the pipe wick kit.
And as said, I agree that the hi-boy is the most uncomfortable (and dangerous) piece of equipment ever invented.
That’s a walk down memory lane!

We use to just go in one direction

We only had problems in the hay field, seems to never have been in pasture. At certain growth stages it can be toxic to cows ( prussic acid ), mainly when the Johnson grass is stressed ( drought, frost, etc)

Keep cutting it. Don’t let it seed…it’ll go away eventually
