Is this a solid lawnmower that will last me a decade or more?

I don't have a huge yard front or back so I don't need a zero turn or rider. Just need something reliable and self-propelled.

absolutely

of course, you could also buy one for half the price and still get one that could last you a decade, just need minor annual maintenance

my Troybuilt w/Honda engine is still going strong after a decade

I bought the same Honda lawnmower earlier this year. I can't vouch for how long it will last but I can say that it is the best lawnmower that I have ever bought. I would recommend.

Honda will last you two decades but I have a Toro push mower that still starts up on the first pull that I've had for 9 years. Changed the oil only once

You may not need to spend all that money on a Honda when there are others out there that will last you at least a decade with minimum TLC for a good bit less.

Im going on 7 years of Honda with GCV170. Mine is the one with electric start. Its a workhorse and their blade system leaves best finish of any pusher.

Only issue Ive had is with the electric starter. Its expensive to replace but its classic case of gear not engaging. Ive cleaned the starter and it engages more but not cleanly. I just pull start, which is a two pull everytime.

Other than that just worn out stock plastic tires. So I fixed that with cutup BMX tire and screws. It never has lose of traction now.

10 years isn't long for a lawnmower. My Craftsman from 1996 is still running strong.

I recommend front wheel self propel with the big back tires. It's very easy to turn at the end of a row with that setup.

I've had this one since 2012. Troy bilt with a honda engine. It's never been kept inside. I usually put a galvanized wash tub over the engine, though. It still starts first pull. I replaced the deck last year. I got a new one from a crack head for 20 bucks. It still starts on the first pull. I see no reason why it wouldn't last 10 years if you hose the deck off after use and keep it in a shed or garage.

Good idea - my Honda self propelled mower’s rear wheels are worn like that and it’s only 3 years old.

Why the hell do lawnmower (tires) wear out so damn fast? I mean 99% of the time, they are pulling on grass. Where is the wear coming from? I've had mowers that last for well over 10 years and I have to change the "tires" 4 or 5 times.

THIS idea is great though.

That one IS self propelled. The wheels with power are the front two. When you get to the end of a row, just tilt the front wheels in the air and make the turn. No need to let go of the self propel handle all the time. The big wheels make turning very easy.

Here's the same type. It's a TORO, but has a Honda motor on it. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Troy-Bilt-XP-21-in-160-cc-Honda-Gas-Walk-Behind-Self-Propelled-Lawn-Mower-with-High-Rear-Wheels-3-in-1-TriAction-Cutting-System-TB270-XP/308039156

Troy-Bilt TB270 XP walk-behind lawn mower features a 160cc Honda engine that provides dependable, no choke starting with the Auto Choke System. Variable speed front wheel drive improves control and allows for faster turning while mowing. The 11 in. high rear wheels provide improved traction and maneuverability on hills and over rough spots in the lawn.

I would recommend Toro's personal pace over the Honda. The toro super recyclers have a slightly better cut than the hondas do IMO.

The Honda probably has a better engine but even at that I don't know that it is worth it. I have a toro with a 13 year old B&S that starts first pull and runs like new.

You really can't go wrong with either a Honda or Toro but I feel the personal pace is a differentiator that most people prefer once they try it.

They don't all do that. Honda wheels do seem to wear out really fast for some reason. Toro wheels on mowers I repair that are 10+ years old rarely need replaced. My wheels of 13+ years are still like new tread wise.

My Toro 22" recycler has been absolute fricking garbage. Im absolutely convinced I got a lemon. Its about 4 years old and I am constantly fixing something on it, cleaning the carburetor out, etc.

Latest saga last week, I couldn't get it to run so I replaced the carburetor completely. That didn't work so I basically took apart everything except the actual engine and cleaned it and made sure it was all good. After no success I brought it to a shop and apparently the arm and gate that control the air intake was installed incorrectly where it went to the engine or something. I want to be done with it but at this point I feel like I should just get as much as I can out of it then light it on fire.

The larger engine on the Honda helps with grass like Zoysia when cutting it lower. Also the Honda decks will never rust.

But I wouldn't hesitate on the super recycler or Honda both will last a long time.

The Honda I put in the OP is $400 and the Toro and Troy-Built self-propelled options with Honda engines are all $350ish.

I don't see a much cheaper option for self-propelled with a Honda engine.

Can I go with a non-Honda engine? I always feel like everyone says that is the biggest thing.
